Coronavirus in N.Y.: ‘Deluge’ of Cases Begins Hitting Hospitals
NY Times ^ | 03-20-2020 | Staff

New York State’s long-feared surge of coronavirus cases has begun, thrusting the medical system toward a crisis point.

In a startlingly quick ascent, officials reported on Friday that the state was closing in on 8,000 positive tests, about half the cases in the country. The number was 10 times higher than what was reported earlier in the week.

In the Bronx, doctors at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center say they have only a few remaining ventilators for patients who need them to breathe. In Brooklyn, doctors at Kings County Hospital Center say they are so low on supplies that they are reusing masks for up to a week, slathering them with hand sanitizer between shifts.

Some of the jump in New York’s cases can be traced to significantly increased testing, which the state began this week. But the escalation, and the response, could offer other states a glimpse of what might be in store if the virus continues to spread. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday urged residents to stay indoors and ordered nonessential businesses to keep workers home.

State officials have projected that the number of coronavirus cases in New York will peak in early May. Both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio have used wartime metaphors and analogies to paint a grim picture of what to expect. Officials have said the state would need to double its available hospital beds to 100,000 and could be short as many as 25,000 ventilators.

As it prepares for the worst-case projections, the state is asking retired health care workers to volunteer to help. The city is considering trying to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a makeshift hospital.

The last time I heard this many ambulance sirens piercing the NYC night was 9/11 . #COVID19 is slamming us...8000 cases and counting, hospitals full, #Trump declared us a national emergency zone. Things turned radically today....our surge has started. pic.twitter.com/jEwk7W2upe— Laurie Garrett (@Laurie_Garrett) March 21, 2020

Since the primary use is for treatment of malaria, there probably isn’t much in the US. Countries where malaria is common would probably have more.

You are an ass.

We are 2 weeks behind Italy on the growth curves.
It’s 1/5th the size of the US and is having 600 deaths a day.
But keep that head firmly jammed up your butt.

The Spanish Flu one hundred years ago over time killed more than 600,000 people in the USA. With the current population compared to the population then you would be looking at at least close to 3 million now. Hey he no idea what hit them back then. At least we know what we are up against. We can fight it and 100 years ago they basically could not.

Hot tip, doc:

In a heavy-duty toxic fog on the jobsite, I supplement the N-95 with a muslin kitchen cloth that's 30 x 30.

Dirt cheap at Walmart.

A buck and half per towel, and you can wash the lot all day long.

I don’t know if you do or don’t. But based on your earlier posts, you have no credibility with me.

There is now reason to believe we can drive the numbers down, if we have indeed identified effective medicines and can cut through the red tape.

There was an increase in number of cases yesterday in the US (most from New York). Not unexpected because many more people are being tested now.

The good news is there was an actual decline in the number of deaths though. From 57 Thursday to 49 on Friday.

That is NOT the type of exponential growth most everyone has been predicting.

Praying it is because some of these treatments are proving effective and not just a one day statistical anomaly.

Well, please let me shutter in the fear that I have no credibility with you. Actually this I take as a compliment. Validates my position. It is a burden when the data does not project what you so want to happen. I hear the DU is looking for members. Please remind us what your credentials are? I have taken care of this disease? You? Not so much.

Yet Lennox Hill hospital in NYC reported yesterday that they have treated a 100+ in patients with Hydroxychloroquine and not one death.

This would be big news if true.

Do you have a source?

Between just 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., 14 people in New York City died from the virus, pushing the Big Apple’s total death toll to 43.

Some hyperbole.

I have been waiting every two weeks. Analyze the data. Italy delisted its demographics is decelerating statistically in cases. 1.2 factor to 1.1, and likely will continue to decelerate. Multiple other countries have flattened the curve. NY, out biggest city and hotspot has a death rate of 0.5%. I honestly understand that you are rooting for death and destruction, must be an awful word in which to live

For one thing, throw in another 20% for asymptomatic people. Studies show about 1 out of 5 people infected never show symptoms. So they aren’t in the total. We are also not testing everyone. So it’s missing more people there.

The statistics seem to point more towards a death rate between 0.75% and 1%. The large majority of which are people over the age of 65 or have other underlying conditions.

There is no reason why the additional supplies including ventilators can’t be furnished by both the state and federal governments. The shortage in NYC can easily be addressed.

Lennox hill hospital attending physicians reported this. But dont tell DANNY TN as he will certainly say this is not true. I honestly cannot imagine what it must be to be invested in the death and destruction of our liberties.
