A coronavirus cautionary tale from Italy: Don’t do what we did

Many of us were too selfish to follow suggestions to change our behavior. Now we’re in lockdown and people are needlessly dying.

Keep in mind that in some of these European countries (Italy being the most prominent case) the government responded to this outbreak by closing schools and shutting down businesses and government offices.

Students and workers responded by conducting themselves as if they had just been given an unexpected vacation. So they traveled, filled up bars and restaurants, etc. In other words, they did all the things you would NOT want people to do in the event of a viral outbreak.

The government of Italy might have been better off just leaving the schools and workplaces open.

The underlying event isn't designed by the media to hurt Trump.

The media's coverage of it sure is.

If there was no COVID-19 virus outbreak, the media would be blaming Trump for global warming, plastic trash in the oceans, wildfires in the western U.S., etc.

It’s a logical response, given how hostile the MSM is to Trump and how they love to cry wolf.

But, despite the reasonableness, it is an incorrect conclusion.

The media in Israel has dissected what went wrong in Italy, as it is a close neighbor. Couple of things:

1. They didn’t shut down travel with China.
2. They kept workplaces open, so kids went to live with the grandparents
3. People just ignored it and went to pagan-era spring Bacchanalias that have been re-dressed up as Nazarene Lent activities.

This virus has changed one thing for me and that is my thoughts about there being many wise people on this sight.
Just the content of this thread alone is amazing

And the media is stoking the fear machine at full blast. I think things will start getting back to normal before Easter.

No, the COVID19 epidemic is not a manufactured event.

The unprecedented hysteria, hoard-buying, and market crashes, however, are being ginned up by the the Hive press,
aided and abetted by the democrat party, big entertainment, big sports, big business, big tech, academia, and the Hive think tanks, and blindly acted upon by their sycophants, groupies, toadies, and junkies.

Ours wouldn’t be the first currency or market destroyed by the money gangsters in order to provide them with a massive enrichment opportunity.

COVID19 presented an opportunity they couldn’t let “go to waste”.

Human suffering means nothing to them. In fact, the more the better for their bottom line.

It is unusual as the mortality rate among the elderly is extremely high.....higher than the regular flu because of the severe impact on respiratory systems.

Doing nothing means most people will survive just fine, but they will spread it to the elderly who will die en-masse.

Nobody wants the deaths of millions of elderly hanging around their necks.

I'm not even sure what "doing nothing" even means.

If the elderly are the most vulnerable people exposed to the virus, then what exactly is the point of telling a 20-something adult that he can't go to a bar on St. Patrick's Day?

I agree with what you’ve said.

The human response to the virus may well be more dangerous than the virus.

Personally, I’m afraid of that widespread panic, but I am also fearful that this virus is indeed a Chinese bio-weapon, and that is terrifying to me.

The Chinese are not nice people. If they made this... God.

We're all headed for lockdown now.

Should people that spread the seasonal flu to someone that died feel just as guilty?

Is Obama a mass murderer for doing nothing about the swine flu?

It’s not selfish, it’s recognizing that none of this economic bloodletting to save the “health system” is worth it, it is a really stupid way to go about saving the health system by making everybody poor. What genius thought this up?

Cities are starting to lockdown. Schools are closed, and retirement homes are quarantined.

This isn't a joke. People who are treating this too lightly are exacerbating the problem.

This is exactly what happened in Boston.

I suspect nothing terribly unusual is taking place on the medical front.

Then you don't know anyone in the "medical front".

I got a first-hand update from a medical professional within the last 48 hours. Three things I came away with from that conversation:

1. This person hasn't implemented any special measures for his own family members that he hasn't been doing already for years.

2. This virus was probably in circulation for far longer than is being reported ... probably since last summer.

3. Two of his extended family members probably had it three months ago, and didn't even know it.

I agree...us geezers and the immune compromised should be isolating. .the rest of the population? Not so much. But, I do think more people are learning about good “hygiene” ...my DIL for one, finally!

To keep things in perspective, 2 months into the H1N1 (Swine Flu) pandemic, 1,000 Americans had already died.
Did you see the media melting down when Obama was there?

“Many of us were too selfish to follow suggestions to change our behavior. “

So you are accusing persons here, and maybe yourself, for spreading Cov-19?? Do you know anyone here, or in your family that is Cov-19 positive???

What is needed to contain any viral outbreak is (1) identify persons infected, (2) quarantine the infected, (3) treat the ill in isolation, (4) don’t panic. Blaming everyone as carriers has nothing to do with science. And what is the death rate???? And who does not shake off a Cov-19 infection? The same people who do not shake off a flu. And how many have already been infected by the flu? MILLIONS. And did they call it a “pandemic”? No. And how many have died from the flu already? 61,200 in 2018-29. And did they call it a pandemic? No.

Yes the corona virus is serious. And yes people should do many personal things to keep their bare hands off surfaces outside their home, never touch a hand to their nose, eyes or mouth, and wash their hands frequently. If there should have been a run on anything it should have been disposable latex gloves, not “sanitizers” and masks. Social contact would not a major problem if all those individual safe practices were followed.
