The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
The time of year when we plan on what we're going to plant and where.
Happy planning, and planting!
Ah, Spring! When a young man’s thoughts turn to what a young woman has been thinking about all year! :/
I have six trays of seedlings, all doing pretty good. Im growing tomatoes and peppers of various kinds, broccoli, wisteria, my maple seeds arent sprouting, probably not viable. Today or tomorrow Im planting spinach, lettuce, radishes, peas, and probably the two biggest wisteria sprouts. Zone six, well probably have another snow and several light freezes. Eastern Kansas, NE.
Greetings from southern New Hampshire, where it is starting to act like early Spring!
I have the roof over the deck off of my shop completed, except for metal panels. I also have started cleaning up around the ranch, pulling out old canopy anchors from my garden, and finally finding my original t-stake driver and more importantly, the t-stake puller! Now, I can move the west pen fencing to give me more room between the back deck and the pen. This will require transplanting some perennials, and the rerouting of the electric fence.
Our midwinter duckings, Huey, Dewey, Loui and Fred have integrated into the existing flock and the brooder is taken apart for final finishing and painting. Much quieter in the house, and the duck dander is gone.
I am starting to think about garden plans. I cant wait to try out the sleeve hitch disk unit that I picked up for free, last fall. Against my better judgement, I may pull the snow thrower from the Craftsman, this weekend.
Eek! I woke up to a world shrouded in Ice!
It was quite the chore to walk the dog.
The slowest of the performing arts is right! Here’s a sped up version to give some morning cheer. All the best to my dear gardening friends!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6Uw2DJ9Md8
I use the Jiffy Greenhouse 72 cell setup. Works great.
It's suppose to be in the 40s this week...Zone 6. Woner if lettuce or spinach would survive directly in the garden.
Impressive, glory to God. But in zone 6 also is it not too early to start tomatoes since we them for 2 months due to the ground temp and danger of freezing? But perhaps you have much sunny windows space or a greenhouse.
OMG, that is mesmerizing. I just have to get some help with that endless, endless mowing, so I have some time for the rewarding work.
We returned from a week in New Orleans and started tomatoes, peppers plus a dozen varieties of flowers yesterday.
Will venture down to our “beach house” where the grow lights glow...
Spring is almost here because the squirrels are digging up my crocus bulbs! Gotta get the cayenne put down on them this morning. :)
We started hiring a neighbor boy for the grass a couple of years ago, well worth it.
If only... you can't imagine the size and scope of this job. It would be cost prohibitive for a job well done, if anyone would do it.
Started forking up the garden area. Bigger than others before. I skipped gardening last year and the grass took over most of it. I did put some heavy black plastic over some of it and killed that grass off. I forked the perimeter and a couple rows at the top end and will have my daughter finish it. Basically just flipping the sod over. Frost free date is over a month away. The area I’m doing is the size my high tunnel will be. Not sure if I’ll get the tunnel done this year. I know I’ll get the frame done and some sort of perimeter to keep grass, weeds and moles from infiltrating. Plastic plus the wiggle wire and track to hold the plastic plus drip irrigation, vents, end walls, all add up to some $$$. I’ll have to check prices on everything again and see if I can find a special on plastic.
Picked up another peach tree from walmart. This time I looked up the variety before buying. The last one is known only as something walmart sells and it’s too early a variety for my grow zone. Most years it flowers and then we get a freeze. Flowers drop off - no peaches for me. The few I’ve gotten were the best thing I’ve ever tasted though. This new one I got is called White Princess(racist /s) and is supposed to be a late variety but it’s budding already while my older one isn’t. ??? Might be because it’s potted. Need to get the new one in the ground later this weekend. Got a 50% chance of rain Sun night and 100% chance of rain Monday so I’ll plant it Sun after the sun goes down past the trees.
Haven’t even thought about seeds or what I’ll be planting. Maybe I’ll do that Monday since it will be raining and I’ll be stuck inside. Probably get them from Baker Creek since it’s fairly local and their plants/seeds should be acclimated to Missouri weather and clayey soil. Our temps have suddenly gone from freezing to 60 degrees. I’m sure it will get cold again. Crazy Ozarks weather. Snowed 6 inches in early May one year. Frost free is mid April.
Meanwhile, I’ve got 12 acres to finish fencing in, other homestead projects, self employment starting this year and this damn coronavirus. Busy busy.
That’s too bad. Our lawn is not that big we are in the woods mostly.
We are having longer winter here in Willamette Valley of Oregon...camelia just started blooming (usually happens in January )...you all are getting me motivated to plant some seeds inside!
