According to the ADSB transponder data he was following the 101 Fwy to Thousand Oaks. Then suddenly turned and dropped rapidly. Last data point shows he was dropping at 4,000 FPM which is pretty extreme...
Not true! the blades do not have to stop in midair, I have been in full no power auto-rotations in a Sikorsky CH-53 from 2500 ft where the pilot never applied power to the engines.
Aircraft attitude and rotor speed make for safe auto-rotations.
Youre likely a pathetic little worm in real life too.
I shouldn’t bag on the website, maybe my browser just doesn’t like it. That happens.
From the wiki page, the S-76 is a very safe helicopter with very few crashes.
That is a very inspirational story.
Kobe deserves credit for the turn around.
Today, I am seeing pictures of him and realized I knew his name, but did not really know what he looked like.
Silly, but I was happy not to see “tatts” at least I didn’t see any. Somehow, I liked him more.
I rewatched the video and you’re right, that’s all desert hills. Thanks for the correction!
No the worst part isnt dying together, the worst part is being the ones left behind. Chances are it happened so fast the only one who knew was Kobe and he was trying desperately to keep it from happening. The rest of the family will experience that in their minds for years to come.
Everything has a glide path.
“I dont think the ADS-B returns are all that precise.”
They are very precise. Why would you think they are not precise?
“Cannot a powerless helicopter autorotate down at relatively slow speeds?”
Usually at least 500 feet is needed to autorotate. Seems this flight was just too close to the ground.
It works in crappy bottom-of-the-barrel MS Edge but you have to have a premium account to see most of the flight statistics like ascent/descent rate. But that’s cool, I believe that it was 4000 FPM. I’m sure there will be a lot more about this in the coming days, probably more than we want. Whole thing is terrible.
“Was Kobe one of the anthem kneelers?”
No, but he said he would if he was still playing. Screw him. He disrespects the country that gave him his celebrity life, so I don’t mind returning the favor.
Interesting!
Exactly. No time or altitude for the craft to auto rotate.
I hope he was holding his daughter close to protect her and that she felt protected by him.
Because not every ADS report is recorded by sites like Flightradar24.
The YouTuber "VASAviation has the ATC comms posted....the loops over Glendale were a 15+ minute holding pattern for other traffic.
Oh, you didn’t mean ADS-B was imprecise but that the collection of ADS-B data is imprecise. Got it, and agree.
ADS-B, which I am perhaps a collection expert since I am a chief architect of data management systems involving ADS-B, is a short range radio signal, so it isn’t going to be picked up in every location. All kinds of tracking systems have been devised, even some you can buy for a personal computer, but it was never intended to be a wide area system.
I think I might as well.
