Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, are stepping back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family and plan to work towards becoming "financially independent," the couple announced on Instagram on Wednesday.
"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year" they wrote, explaining that they hope to "carve out a progressive new role within this institution." "We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen," they said.

I can’t understand the nastiness here. All they said is that they’re stepping down from royal duties and will be financially independent. That any American fiscal conservative has a problem with that decision makes no sense.

I honestly believe Prince Philip would be thinking about executing Markle if this was 30 years ago. I don’t know if he was behind Diana but he was certainly capable of it.
Clearly, Harry thinks so as well.
Since they won't be part of the royal establishment anymore, and won't be conducting any royal duties, does that mean they will have to pay for their own protection? How about their living arrangements? They currently live in royal apartments. Must be Meghan doesn't like traveling around the world, pretending that she actually cares about all those countries who are still under British rule.

I couldn't stand the stifled, hidebound, constricted life and duties that centuries-old British royalty and "nobility" imposes on its members, despite all the material goodies that come with the job.
I'd have to get OUT to work and succeed at what I loved doing....and to live and enjoy a life of duties and challenges that weren't forced on me by others till the day I died. I know exactly how this couple feels.
I, too, don't understand the hateful remarks and insults slung at this royal couple, since our FReeper conservative credo means FREEDOM with its attendant responsibilities....and it look Harry and Meghan are going to give this new life a try.
I bet there's more than one member of the royal family that envies them !

They aren’t quitting THE FIRM to go work at Costco or make a D List movie.
They are quitting because they want to monetize their celebrity gained from being in THE FIRM but THE FIRM wouldn’t let them. So now they quit so they can capitalize on it.

I don’t pretend to know what’s going on, but I’d be willing to bet it may be Brexit and/or Spygate related in some way. Especially since this announcement comes right after they’d spent weeks off the radar, not even coming out for photo-ops.
