The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I really don’t think this lemon is going to be happy here in the cool rainy northwest but it was a gift from our son & his wife. A Meyer lemon might have been a better choice
I received a pair of new cedar duck boxes from a Minnesota farm and home store. They were made in Green Bay.
I plan to put them on posts in front of the rip rap on our lake shore.
Bats we have lots...
Happy New Year to you!
Try your hand at pollinating. Fun thing and it does work. I tried it on my pumpkins.
The Japanese Wanpaku sandwich-----colorful vegetables add to the delicious leftover turkey, ham....etc.
Layer shredded carrots, cabbage, sliced tomatos, avocado, hard-cooked eggs, whatever leftovers you have on hand.
Looks delicious but who could take a bite out of that, so tall.
Start at the edges......then whittle it down bite per bite.....LOL.
Bittersweet has always been a favorite of mine. :)
I don't always follow it to the letter, but if disease is an issue for you due to a small space, rotating helps!
Mine usually don’t bloom until February, too. But by then I really, REALLY need something blooming, LOL!
My Paperwhites are just about pooped out; wish I had more to force, but I didn’t buy as many as usual for some reason.
Jealous! I’d love a Lemon Tree, but don’t have any good place for it in the winter months. :(
I received my first seed book the other day.
I’ve gotten 6 so far - but I’m a glutton for punishment, LOL!
Thank you for the thread.
Nice chart. Already sharing it with family.
I had a bat house for years my dad built. Never got any bats, laf. We took it down a year or so ago after i found out a friend of mine got bats in her roof. Cost her a great deal in clean up. So I got a little spooked trying to house them on my little plot of property. Laf.
Wood ducks are a nicer group...
LOL is right, I would have to have a detachable jaw like those snakes.
My Resolutions (although I just call them “plans”):
1. Grow 70 or more “Bigger Better Butternut” squash. This is a Carol Deppe variety, and was very hard to get hold of. She introduced it at about the same time she stopped filling orders. After much searching, I found someone who had bought a packet from her in-person and grew them out. They sent me over 100 seeds :) I hope to offer it to Baker Creek, as well as sharing seeds online next year.
2. Grow at least 20 plants from my pumpkin-breeding project. 2 of them last year were sweeter than sugar. I’m hoping to stabilize that trait.
3. Grow my own luffa gourds.
4. Try out 3 new melon varieties and see how they do.
5. Figure out a way to keep the weeds to a manageable level.
6. Build lots of trellises.
If you have a problem with squash bugs or plant diseases, I wouldn’t recommend it. Otherwise go for it, but keep an eye out for problems.
