...and people say pot is a 'victimless' crime.

Seems to me the police union guy was blaming the victim.

On the one hand it is,IMO,very,*very* unwise for a young woman to be roaming the streets of NYC at midnight...particularly alone. But,OTOH,that doesn't mean that such a young woman is fair game for murder.
A kid..her first time away from home...her parents should have had a *long* talk with her before she left.

What I am understanding is that [Majors] was in the park to buy marijuana,
So what? It doesn't matter why she was there. Does that make it less of a crime?

Sometimes a victim contributes to the situation.
"Victim shaming" is a recent invention by folks who seem to think that any observation that a victim contributed to his or her situation is off limits.
It *can* be used to make people feel better ("it'll never happen to me") and in some cases I suppose the observation is intended to shame the victim.
I think the police are simply saying here that there are certain places that will get certain people into trouble if they go there. Young white girl going alone to bad part of town to purchase drugs is almost a guarantee of a robbery and/or murder. Sad, perhaps, but true.

It is not good for a young white female to be alone at midnight almost anywhere let alone a bad part of the city.
But it doe not lessen the horrible crime committed by these thugs.

His twitter has since been removed but he is a far leftie. Every other post was an anti trump meme.
The gal in question was also a far left radical.
No grandkids for him.

If true, she’s dumber than I thought. There are lots of ways to get pot than go to a city park after dark.

No, but it sends a message, and alerts others like her that it's dangerous to be roaming the streets and parks of New York at night in pursuit of whatever good time you're looking for. Kids think their invincible. They always think it won't happen to them...that this kind of stuff happens to other people. It doesn't hurt to give them a "wake-up" call on how easy it is to lose your life for the dumbest reasons.

Shame what happened to her, regardless of her political leaning.
However, getting her pot from the street is a talking point. Would have given her some cred. Getting it from the campus dealer, where all you have to do is send him a text message and he’ll probably deliver it for you, isn’t cool.
Hell, right now there’s an app where you peruse a menu, pick what you want and it tells you where and who to get it from. No sh*t. I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. You want HinduKush, hit the button and voila. You want some other kind of Kush, hit the button and voila.
