On the one hand it is,IMO,very,*very* unwise for a young woman to be roaming the streets of NYC at midnight...particularly alone. But,OTOH,that doesn't mean that such a young woman is fair game for murder.
A kid..her first time away from home...her parents should have had a *long* talk with her before she left.

Tessa Majors was murdered at 5:30 pm when it was dusk but not night, in a park across the street from her college. That’s a long way from the pejorative “roaming the streets at midnight”.
