Sometimes a victim contributes to the situation.

"Victim shaming" is a recent invention by folks who seem to think that any observation that a victim contributed to his or her situation is off limits.

It *can* be used to make people feel better ("it'll never happen to me") and in some cases I suppose the observation is intended to shame the victim.

I think the police are simply saying here that there are certain places that will get certain people into trouble if they go there. Young white girl going alone to bad part of town to purchase drugs is almost a guarantee of a robbery and/or murder. Sad, perhaps, but true.

If you look at Google Maps, you’ll see that this isn’t “a bad part of town” - the park is right across the street from the college dorms. Basically, the Columbia campus cops and security people dropped the ball.

'Young white girl going alone to bad part of town to purchase drugs'

This is upper Manhattan. The park is adjacent to her school and next to Mt. Sinai. Not the mecca of crime, nor a bad part of town.

That area is not as bad as it once was trust me....it used to be very bad

I was there recently and was surprised how gentrified it had become

This little bunch of thugs were kind of out of their element

They belonged north of 125th

And that may be where they came from it’s only ten blocks north

Thanks for your insight.

Don't "jog" in areas that are prone to muggings and definitely don't seek narcotics in troubled areas that are prone to muggings, day or night.

This "empowerment" culture is creating a bunch of misguided "stronk" women who think they are impervious to society's dark-side and can overpower anyone and anybody. Life is not a Disney fairy tale, people are constantly after marks who ignore their own limitations..

That said, violent feral youths should hang.

Sometimes a victim contributes to the situation.

The problem is that the City doesn't want to spend the money policing the parks. This is all the Mayor's fault and the libs that run NYC. With the way Harlem has gentrified over the past couple of decades the whole island of Manhattan should be one big low crime zone.

And if she was walking home from working the night shift at a diner and got robbed and murdered everyone would be more content over the quality of her character for being murdered?

Christ almighty.

So she needed to stay indoors after dark, dressing in a nun's habit, going out with a male relative and walking three feet behind him at all times?

College kids leave the safety of their dorm. That's no excuse to be robbed and murdered. Who gives a flying leap why she was out of her dorm, across the bloody street from it, and got killed.

Your inherent character bias is showing and that's unfortunate.
