Welcome to the annual cold season. Most of us will get between one and three colds each year, usually in autumn and winter, caused by one of more than 200 different cold viruses.
And there is little you can do about it a cure for the common cold remains one of the Holy Grails of medicine but better understanding of how these viruses spread could be the key.
What we do know for sure is that the first 24 hours are crucial; this is when the infection takes hold and starts to multiply, causing symptoms.
Here, with the help of three leading experts Professor John Oxford, a virologist at Queen Mary University of London, Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University and Professor Peter Openshaw, a professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College London we explain what is going on during the first 24 hours of your cold and what you can do to reduce the severity of your symptoms.

I find a good, stiff Hot Toddy works wonders (tea, at least a shot of brandy, honey and lemon, which you drink as hot as you can stand).

I’ve used zinc gluconate for over twenty years. That works for people who get a sore throat before the full blown cold.
If the cold always starts with a stuffy head, it usually doesn’t work.
Zinc acetate is the new more effective kid on the block.
I took Oil of Oregano last year a couple of times a week when everyone around me was getting sick. That was the first year in a long time that I haven’t caught a cold or ‘flu. Just a few drops in a shot of OJ - it’s horribly strong stuff, and I have to drink it fast through a straw. Be careful with it!

I stopped eating excessive chocolate and sweets about a year and a half ago. I did not get a cold last year, something unusual for me. Could it be because I gave up eating lots of sugar? I’m waiting to see this year. I’ve already been exposed to one student with laryngitis (I tutor kids), and did not get sick. To be continued...
Bananas, honey and water. Blend and drink. Zinc added as a supplement.
Health food store. Make sure the oil of oregano is at least 70% and the colloidal silver is 250 PPM. You administer 3 drops of oil of oregano under your tongue three times per day. Hold it under your tongue as long as you can before swallowing. I use one tablespoon of colloidal silver in a small swallow of water three times per day with it.

i buy it from New Zealand direct. And yes, there are all kinds of manuka honey products available and all vary in quality. you have to do your research.
Originally bought it years ago to combat bedsores in a cancer patient.
Last year I needed it fast and so just bought some from CVS. Also bought some manuka honey cough drops from them.
The Vicks UK web site lists several UK retailers where you can purchase it. But it appears that Amazon is the only place to buy it in the U.S.
Most of the Amazon customers who use it (disregarding the lack of safety seals) swear by it. But, at digitalspy, one Brit reviewer wrote "I've tried it on a few occasions and I think it's bloody snake oil to be honest. Probably placebo, and really sodding expensive for what it is."
I think I'll give it a try.

Better: during cold season, take a lot of vitamin d with k every day, get ahold test to make sure the level of D3 in blood is over 60.
When you feel the first symptom: take liposomal vitamin c, eat a zinc lozenges, and head to bed for lots of extra sleep.
When awake, rinse nose with neilmed bottle, add a few drops of apple cider vinegar to your bottle as well. Make sure the fluid gets down to the throat as you rinse.
Sleep with drops of thieves or oregano essential oil on your soles of your feet (use socks over it if you fear you will slip on the floor at night). Can also put a couple drops on the chest of your night clothes.
Keep up the vitamin c and zinc until symptoms gone, 1-2x a day.
These things might kick the cold before it comes or shorten it for real.

Manuka honey has antibiotic qualities. It is strong enough to get rid of MRSA and other bacterial infections, especially as a topical, but a cold is usually viral and needs an antiviral. They are currently studying honeysuckle as an antiviral, which apparently has the same effectiveness as Tamiflu (https://www.sciencealert.com/honeysuckle-tea-can-treat-influenza-a-viruses-and-possibly-ebola).
Getting honeysuckle blooms out of season is hard. Since elderberry in a member of the honeysuckle family, we use elderberry wine, although they aren’t studying it.
