The sun features an outer layer of convective activity that produces strong magnetic fields, but most massive stars are without this feature. Is there a proof reader or copy editor left at the AP?
If the above is referring to our Solar System's star, as it appears to be intending, then this should be capitalized as the formal name; "The Sun". Or perhaps use the possessive here as in "Our Sun". As it stands here, the ap's grammar is as bad as their LEFTward bias, which is no real surprise!

One pound of mass turned to energy would yield a 10 mega ton blast. I mention this because the energy density of a magnastar is 10000 times that of lead. If I somehow turned a bar of lead into pure energy the field strength is 10000 times more energetic. Atoms in such a field get stretched so they are 100 times longer than wide. Needless to say the strongest maganetic field ever made by people is millions of times weaker.
