Keto diet is not good for you long term - expert warns against popular weight loss plan

KETO diet methods are becoming increasingly more popular among those looking to lose weight. However, a nutritionist has warned that dieters should avoid the plan long term.

Low carb diets have been popular for some time among those who want to lose weight fast.

The keto diet is a particularly high fat version.

However, an expert has warned that the diet may not be safe longterm.

Although, many swear by this method to help them drop the pounds. The keto diet, or ketogenic diet, is a low-carb diet plan.

Dieters may only eat low carb foods, such as lean meat and dairy. The idea of the diet is to put the body into a state of ketosis.

This is an alternative metabolic rate in which the body burns fat instead of carbohydrates to survive.

However, the diet was not originally used for weight loss. In fact, it was used as a cure for epilepsy.

Hebe Mills, who is an Associate Nutritionist, told Express.co.uk: "The Ketogenic diet has been used since the 1920s as a medical therapy diet for epilepsy patients that do not respond to anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs) to aid seizure control."

“The difficulty I have is adjusting my diabetic meds to the diet and avoiding getting hypoglycemic.”

That is tricky and you do have to be very careful, as blowing the meds can get you in huge trouble. There are clinics/programs that help people work that part of it, as they cut way back on carbs. As to a doctor, see if you can find one locally - I would say just call the offices, and even the receptionists should know whether the doctors are old-school, or willing to help with Low Carb. Your doctor seems to be old-school, although often doctors have no choice (that is, if they want to keep their medical group jobs, or keep their malpractice insurance).

“Some suggest eating lean beef, but adding butter or coconut oil to the beef to get the fats, especially if the beef is fed with chemicals that can get into the fat.”

Good point! Wife got lean pork chops for us not too long ago. She cooked them good (not overdone), but I still dumped the whipped butter on them!

I tried Keto for a month. In addition to weight loss, all my cardio indicators were good for the first time in years. My cardiologist said whatever you are doing keep doing it.

I am still low carb, just not as low as I was during that time period. Since I eased into the keto, by gradually cutting carbs, instead of all at once, I didn’t have the flu like symptoms that many talk about.

I probably don’t eat enough leafy greens. Best thing was probably cutting out Soda. When I miss the bubbles, I drink some seltzer water with a slice of lemon or lime.

“Low-carb diets (Atkins, Keto) work very well....as long as you stick to them...I found that I lost a lot of weight with both of them. However, once I got off of them, I gained just as fast, and had accompanying health problems, like blood clots in the legs, pulmonary embolism, and Type 2 diabetes.”

Sorry to hear that, but that is a great lesson for everyone here. It is really a lifestyle that needs to be maintained, as the crappy effects of high carb are often just waiting to strike again, once the conditions allow.

The energy source is fat not carbs.

Babies are born in a state of ketosis. Our children are displaying T2D and insulin resistance at younger and younger ages, not to mention rampant obesity. Of course the Keto lifestyle can be appropriate for young people.

Certainly, young people without insulin resistance can support cheat days without the major effects. But those who have insulin resistance/T2D should not have cheat days. As mentioned in another post, a cheat day for those people is similar to an alcoholic or drug addict having a “cheat day.”

There are no specific essential carbohydrates (as with the eight/nine amino acids, or the two essential fatty acids), but carbohydrates as a macro-food group are a natural and necessary part of the human diet. The body does store carbohydrates to a limited extent as glycogen, in the muscles and liver.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to get all needed nutrients in a diet devoid of caloric carbohydrates. (Nota Bene: Most fruits contain caloric carbohydrates; avocados are a great exception.)

We do not live in a natural way - in almost any dimension. We do not forage or farm, expending calories. People over-consume caloric (and often nutrient-deficient) carbohydrates, and then sit for hours. Since the body does not burn those calories, they are converted into body fat as stored energy, once the glycogen limit has been exceeded (which is easily done in sedentary individuals).

The Keto Diet is indeed not suitable for continual use: It is too acid-forming systemically (which in the long term promotes numerous degenerative conditions, including especially osteopenia), and too hard on the kidneys and liver. For short term, intermittant, use by persons with healthy kidneys and liver, it can be quite effective.

I nearly died thirty years ago. I studied natural diet and nutrition, and stopped visiting doctors. (I have not consulted with a Medical Doctor since 1995, although if I broke a limb tomorrow, I would immediately do so: trauma, yes, prevention, no.)

My body fat (measured three ways before and after at a college fitness center) went from c. 22% to c. 11%.

(Since I am physically, and legally, disabled, extensive exercise was not an option for me. I had to rely primarily upon diet.)

My current body fat is c. 12-13%, and my waist is 29”. I achieved all of the many benefits through food combining, natural hygeine, herbal cleansing, and nutritional supplementation.

I never once had to resort to the Keto Diet, or its functional equivalent back then, before it became the rage.

I have assisted many over the years, as a I worked as a nutritional consultant in the supplementation industry, and have published one ebook on diet and nutrition, and am writing more. Mine is an informed opinion.

“Don’t take advice from the deep state medical complex.”

What, you don’t trust Dr. Brennan, Dr. Clapper, and Dr. Comey when they tell you that the people pushing Low Carb are really Russian agents working with Trump and that a Special Investigator is needed to get to the bottom of this collusion?

Why is it you DENY reality? After all, 17 intelligence agencies all agree that SOMETHING was going on between Trump and the Russian Low Carb mafia.

“My husband and I went low carb in May of 2018. He lost 90 pounds and I lost the 20 I wanted to lose...Doctor says that he is no longer prediabetic.”

And if you ask 90% of doctors, 98% of ‘nutritionists’, and 100% of food industry lobbyists, they’d say your claim was impossible. And that is DESPITE the peer-reviewed studies that are now in the public domain.

I know what you are talking about.

You have to get kind of fanatical about it and you have to get the relatives to back off on trying to get you to eat the wrong thing too.

One time I was full on into keto and tried a piece of berry pie.
I took one bite and couldn’t stand the sugar, I spit it out even.

I was kidding about the Thanksgiving cheat.

I have gotten away with it in the past but, it’s better to not test your addiction.

Well, it’s not an addiction but, it’s kind of like a junkie thinking he can just do a little and not end up where he was at the bottom.

Same here. That article is not bringing anything new. Nutrition deficiency is a problem of ALL diets, but the Keto one is the least affected by it.

Carbs as brain food? That is debatable. My brain has never functioned as well as it has since I am on it. No more sugar swings. My blood sugar actually goes up after a work out in the morning because the body starts waking up to draw energy from itself. Breakfast is what messed up my sugars as the body fought to get the food from it and from the body at the same time, causing it to go out of tune and confused as to whether store the food or release it from the body to level up the sugars.

Vitamin B is key for brain function without carbs. I have severe g6Pd so most foods are a nono for me in the first place. Keto is ideal for it.
