Keto diet is not good for you long term - expert warns against popular weight loss plan

KETO diet methods are becoming increasingly more popular among those looking to lose weight. However, a nutritionist has warned that dieters should avoid the plan long term.

Low carb diets have been popular for some time among those who want to lose weight fast.

The keto diet is a particularly high fat version.

However, an expert has warned that the diet may not be safe longterm.

Although, many swear by this method to help them drop the pounds. The keto diet, or ketogenic diet, is a low-carb diet plan.

Dieters may only eat low carb foods, such as lean meat and dairy. The idea of the diet is to put the body into a state of ketosis.

This is an alternative metabolic rate in which the body burns fat instead of carbohydrates to survive.

However, the diet was not originally used for weight loss. In fact, it was used as a cure for epilepsy.

Hebe Mills, who is an Associate Nutritionist, told Express.co.uk: "The Ketogenic diet has been used since the 1920s as a medical therapy diet for epilepsy patients that do not respond to anti-epilepsy drugs (AEDs) to aid seizure control."

Please sign me up on your list.
My A1c was just measured at 8.8 and now I have started a low carb regimen.

I dropped 6 pounds in a week, it’s probably mostly water.
Diabetes is killing me, it has given me some pretty severe nerve damage.

I have done it before and it works.
I don’t know why I let it get out of hand, there really is no excuse, maybe, I have been having a subconscious desire to die?

A year ago I was maybe about 20 lbs lighter. That is the difference. If there is any drawback to low carb weight loss it’s how bad you can boomerang away from it to the determent of your health.

I have lost hundreds of pounds through the years.
Yo yo- ing is the danger.

My goal is 7.0 A1c or better at Thanksgiving.
I’m going to have some mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Sugar is poison to many folks who don’t realize it.
An A1c is as important as having your blood pressure checked. The difficulty I have is adjusting my diabetic meds to the diet and avoiding getting hypoglycemic.

My docs solution was more meds.

He does not know me very well, I can effect it more by diet than he probably has the faith that I can.

He’s jut doing what doctors have to do because so many can’t bear the thought of giving up refined sugar and starches.

"No. Then you assume a healthy diet. No short term diet that works is going to hurt you over the long term."

The reason that Keto works is because a ketogenic diet is a healthy diet. Your body runs properly on it, hence you become healthy and lose weight.

"It is only meant to use for about a year."

The alternative "healthy" diets are the problem.

“Dieters may only eat low carb foods, such as lean meat and dairy.”

But this description is not even accurate. Any kind of Keto diet will severely limit carbs but not eliminate them. A Keto dieter can eat high carb foods upon occasion but just on a very limited, measured basis.

Agree, they went too far in trying to shorten the description and “lean” (meat) is simply wrong. But the visuals in the article do seem to get it right, with the exception of not showing enough FATTY meat.

Some suggest eating lean beef, but adding butter or coconut oil to the beef to get the fats, especially if the beef is fed with chemicals that can get into the fat.

I don’t mean government funded studies about healthy diets, but real ones.

Hi BobL, can you add me to the Ping list? Thank you.

I have been Keto for 2 years and I will take my chances with normal blood pressure, great lipid numbers and a A1C of 5.1 versus my stats not on keto. Lol. It makes so much sense to eat this way versus the high sugar regular American diet.

If somehow everyone over night started eating decent foods in decent amounts they’d probably declare Martial Law.

I can’t BELIEVE how long groceries last now. The LAST thing they want is for people to stop buying all the shit that they do in the quantities they do.

Weight loss cured your diabetes. 3 yrs isn’t long term. Of course you’ll lose weight on a diet that cuts out 90% of the food you’re eating..therefore cutting calories.

Please, add me to the ping list. I need a hard solid kick to get back on LC.

Dieters may only eat low carb foods, such as lean meat and dairy.

Oh, puleeze. All these decades later and people are still clueless. Thirty carbs a day is ok and very easy to manage. Broccoli, cauliflower, salad, squash, green beans, greens, asparagus and berries are fine but not potatoes, rice, pasta, corn, bread, sugar and most fruits.

I once told a woman who fed her family cauliflower 3 times a week to mash it up similar to potatoes. She went all kinds of crazy yelling I was trying to kill her kids with LC stuff. Sure, because cauliflower in floret form is healthy but mashing the same dish up somehow magically turns it into poison.

This article is Vegan propaganda. Vegans hate Keto\Primal\Paleo. Like Global Warming, Veganism is a religion..more Gaia worship crap. What is NOT good for you long term is a diet of just plant based foods. It goes against your genetics and what your body has been designed to eat. Humans are omnivores. Want to have hormonal issues and skyrocket your chances of getting numerous chronic diseases, eat a Vegan diet for more than a few years. There is not 1 indigenous peoples on the face of the earth EVER who were vegetarians.

Yes, a red blood cell’s lifespan is 3-4 months. In a nutshell, sick diabetic blood cells die off and new healthy ones replace them.

I’ve been on a modified Atkins diet since 2005. I only needed to lose 15 lbs. It was wonderful. On modified, I get to eat dairy products along with meat and green veggies.

I felt wonderful! High energy. Healthy. With the modified, you hit Keto then lose the desired level. After that, you can add some carbs...mostly veggies for me, to go on the maintenance level. It turns out that I have a low carb tolerance, so adding exciting carbs was a no no. Instead, I’d treat myself 1 day a week. I could eat anything I wanted on that day. It worked very well for me. I do love carbs, but they do not love me.

I had to get dentures. The prescription drugs for Sciatica pain gave me “druggie” teeth. They essentially killed my teeth.

I had to go on a soft diet for 6 months until I finally got the final denture ordered. Another month passed until I actually got the proper denture.

I can’t tell you how miserable I feel. Most soft food is carbs. ACK. I gained 19 lbs! My legs feel like they weigh 1000 lbs, have NO energy. Worse, carbs cause water retention, so most of it is water which is unhealthy for your heart, etc.

I’m just getting back on my original diet. Need to get that weight off fast! I can’t even tell you how miserable and unhealthy I feel.

The odd thing is that my MD kept trying to get me to gain 13 lbs., said I was underweight. LOL I said, but I feel great..have high energy. No diabetes, no high cholesterol, no high blood pressure, etc. My oxygen level is 98! Most my age have at least 2 out of 3 of those conditions. Of course, most are more sedentary than I am.
(I’ve become sedentary because of those lousy soft food carbs! I have no energy to do anything.)

Can’t wait to feel good again. I made pot roast-my only bad was adding carrots which are high in carbs for a veggie. I usually eat them on the maintenance level. It just feels so good to eat real meat again!

Key word there is “cook”. I wouldn’t eat anything less than well done wild game. That said I’ve had some really great game meat but never Sea Lion!
