Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A visitor to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas found a 3.72-carat yellow diamond, the largest diamond found at the park in over two years.
Miranda Hollingshead, 27, of Bogata, Texas, said she was sitting at the base of a hill on the northeast side of the park and watching a YouTube video on her phone about how to find diamonds when she looked down and spotted the gem.
"I shook my hand across it to make sure what it was, picked it up, and yelled across the field to my mom, 'I think I got one!'" Hollingshead said.
The family headed to the park's Diamond Discovery Center, where officials confirmed it was a 3.72-carat yellow diamond. Officials said it was the largest diamond found by a park visitor since March 2017, and the largest yellow diamond found there since October 2013.
Park Interpreter Waymon Cox said recent weather likely contributed to Hollingshead's discovery.
"Much of the ground where Ms. Hollingshead found her diamond is made of unweathered volcanic rock," Cox said.
"When it rains, flowing runoff often leaves loose gravel, and sometimes diamonds, on the surface in these areas. Diamonds have a brilliant, adamantine luster that makes them easy to spot, and Ms. Hollingshead happened to be sitting in just the right place to see the diamond sparkle in the sun," he said.
Hollingshead said she hasn't decided whether to have the diamond appraised and sold, or whether to mount it to a ring as a souvenir.
There have been a few coming out of that spot per recent reports!
The new, ‘Arkansas Diamond Rush?’ ;)
If there was enough to make a profit it wouldnt be open to the public.
She must have the treasurer map to the truth.
There was a recent What on Earth or some show like that where they went to a place in Namibia where there are a LOT more diamonds just lying in the sand. Somebody has been able to keep these off the market for decades. You can go there and pick some up, but you likely wont get out alive. They watch that place pretty closely. The guy on the show hadnt been there long (after a LONG drive through NOWHERE) when a guy showed up and politely told him he needed to go.
“Men grow cold as girls grow old
And we all lose our charms in the end
But square cut or pear shaped
These rocks don’t lose their shape
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend!”
So are deeds to land (lotsa land!), precious metals, Hello Kitty rifles, ammo, dry socks, sturdy boots, a good knife, cases of canned goods and a manual can opener!
Just sayin’. ;)
...dry socks.... I have such fond memories of dry socks being the best experience I ever had. I finished a Field Exercise once and my BDUs walked home by themselves. They had to. I wouldnt let them in my car.
My wife loves that song. I could never figure out why. When we got married I couldnt afford a diamond. I finally got her one for her 25th Anniversary. Maybe that was why she loved it. It took me 25 years to get the hint. Which one is actually the Diamond Anniversary? 50? I may need to do it again in a couple years.
Diamonds are appropriate for every anniversary.
It’ll take a few centuries for her to have enough for that laser satellite.
Thats a tough cut
I see several small stones or a marquis and some mellie
Despite the color wont be much value
Ah, so thats where I lost my 3.72-carat yellow diamond. Big thanks to Ms. Hollingshead for finding it. If she would forward it to me Id really appreciate it.
“Hollingshead said she hasn’t decided whether to have the diamond appraised and sold, or whether to mount it to a ring as a souvenir.”
I think I would find out its real value, then decide if I want the stone or the money.
She's just looking for folks to contact her.
Good old fashioned fun with the family.
Almost yearly someone finds a life changing treasure while visiting there.

One can never go wrong with diamonds.
I'd rather have a puppy, though.
Rule 2 violation. Don’t talk to the state park rangers about your “find”. They over value it and tax you right there.
