NASAs Hubble telescope has recently discovered a supermassive black hole that defies existing theories about the universe, a report said.
The black hole, which is about 250 million times heavier [more massive] than the sun, lies at the heart of the spiral galaxy NGC 3147 and is 140 million light-years from Earth.
The Hubble telescope has detected a supermassive black hole that technically shouldn't exist, according to new findings.
Spotted around the black hole was a thin accretion disk containing debris and gas rapidly pacing around the edge, according to findings published Thursday in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
The black hole was unusual in that its gravitational pull was not capturing the disk of material, which was moving at 10 percent the speed of light, according to the journal.
Lead author Stefano Bianchi said its the same type of disk we see in objects that are 1,000 or even 100,000 times more luminous.
The predictions of current models for gas dynamics in very faint active galaxies clearly failed, Bianchi added.
By observing the disk through blocking out starlight, researchers were able to better study processes happening close to the black holes edge.
The team said they plan to study more galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope in the future to find similar disks of material.

Trying to get a grasp on how all this is possible, I came across this article...Now it makes even less sense to me...Is the telescope seeing images from thousands of years ago???
Haha...Now that was a funny mistake...Here’s the article I was referring to...
And what is it expanding into? If I could travel fast enough to reach the edge of the universe and keep going outracing the expansion. Where would I find myself?
A BFR is only the rocket. You need to have some sort of human-rated maneuverable craft attached to the BFR which is capable of carrying tons of cargo needed to make the changes and which cargo is easily accessible to the astronauts who will install it. Picture the Space Shuttle which once rebuilt the Hubble, now defunct. There is no such craft available presently or in design for the future.
Can’t be done now.
Oh. You’re absolutely right. Let’s not strive to do anything that can’t be done right now.
For a second there I assumed that this was just another AOC article... Once I realized that "Hubble" was not referring to Chelsea's dad, I read more carefully...
Thank you for these astronomy posts...
With all the dark stuff happening down on this planet, it is good and healthy I think to literally look up at the sky from time to time.
Cheers.
You’re welcome. Glad you like and appreciate them.
