Commonly prescribed drugs could increase the risk of dementia, says a new study
Medical XPress ^ | June 24, 2019 | University of Nottingham

Posted on 06/30/2019 6:17:23 PM PDT by ConservativeMind

The study found that there was nearly a 50% increased risk of dementia among patients aged 55 and over who had used strong anticholinergic medication daily for three years or more.

Anticholinergic drugs help to contract and relax muscles. They work by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical that transmits messages in the nervous system.

Doctors prescribe the drugs to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bladder conditions, allergies, gastrointestinal disorders and symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

These medicines can have short-term side effects, including confusion and memory loss, but it is less certain whether long-term use increases the risk of dementia.

The study findings showed increased risks of dementia for anticholinergic drugs overall and specifically for the anticholinergic antidepressants, antipsychotic drugs, antiparkinsons drugs, bladder drugs and epilepsy drugs after accounting for other risk factors for dementia.

No increased risks were found for the other types of anticholinergic drug studied such as antihistamines and gastrointestinal drugs.

This is an observational study so no firm conclusions can be drawn about whether these anticholinergic drugs cause dementia, and it is possible that the drugs were being prescribed for very early symptoms of dementia.

"We found a greater risk for people diagnosed with dementia before the age of 80 which indicates that anticholinergic drugs should be prescribed with caution in middle-aged people as well as in older people."

In the 1-11 years before the dementia diagnosis date or equivalent in controls, nearly 57% of cases and 51% of controls were prescribed at least one strong anticholinergic drug, with an average of six prescriptions in cases and 4 in controls. The most frequently-prescribed types of drugs were antidepressants, anti-vertigo and bladder antimuscarinic drugs—which are used to treat an overactive bladder.

I have had every test available. I had run out of docs to see until one was able to get a diagnosis. It was a week of me shaking so bad I couldn't feed myself, and I don't remember Thanksgiving. It was scarey for my family. I am also taking Rifaxin. The seventy dollar wonder drug. I get them from Canada for a dollar each,

You are correct-they do tell people how to help themselves. Our son’s now retired allergist told him that getting his lungs stronger would help his asthma. Our son was around 11 years old. The advice stuck with him. At 19 he is a machine-has worked out daily for the past 7 years, keeps to an extremely healthy food regimen. Pollens and humidity still trigger his asthma as it’s pretty severe. But, he is a college wrestler; something I never envisioned when he was younger. A six minute match is a long push-sometimes he needs an inhaler, but not always.

Don’t ever take any pharmaceuticals , except aspirin of course

The drug manufacturing industry is multi trillions of dollars and is constantly trying to come up with new Innovative ways to try to catalyze the human body into healing itself

it’s very daunting task because the human body is very complicated and has multiple feedback mechanisms and self regulates actually very well

the western view of the body and treating symptoms is far different than the eastern view of the body and treating me entire body has a unit

Chi. Etc.

From my perspective it is far more effective at treating “illness” and “disharmony”

I used to use benedryl for allergy attacks...hated it...now take a mega dose of vitamin C and am finding it works!

——-

Great. I just took a Benadryl 10 minutes ago. My cold turned into sinus infection and then bronchitis. Dr told me to take allergy meds along with antibiotics Tylenol and ibuprofen. I’ll have to try vitamin c.

Doctors tell patients all the time how to help themselves. Get more exercise, get more sleep, lose weight, reduce sugar and salt, eat more fruits and vegetables. Do people listen?

My doc said it was his job to get me on statins.

I politely refused.

It’s a scientific fact that bacon makes you immune to Alzheimer’s. Because if you eat enough of it you’ll die young from colon cancer.
