Yes, Puerto Ricans take their Miss Universe pageants way too seriously. But apart from the seemingly meaningless event, Ms. Anderson's "victory" raises the question of what is a Puerto Rican and what are they supposed to look like.

Some call "Puerto Ricans" a race, which it is not. Many bundle all Puerto Ricans as "persons of color", which is also very inaccurate. Others label Puerto Ricans as an ethnicity, when Islanders come from very different ethnic backgrounds. In addition to the dominant white Spanish majority and the largest minority of West Africans, there are large representations of Irish, German, French/Corsican, Italian and other west European families that settled on the island before the change of sovereignty in 1898. And of course, as is the case of Ms. Anderson and thousands like her, the Continental American influence, with extensive intermarriage between "Puerto Ricans" and mainland Anglos.

It seems like Puerto Rico is finally on its feet after the hurricanes, since the biggest story of the week is how this half-"gringa" won the Miss Puerto Rico pageant.

Puerto Rico Ping! Please Freepmail me if you want on or off the list.

Anderson was born and raised in Orlando, Florida to a Puerto Rican mother and American Father...

She does not look like what you would expect.

Blonde and fair skinned.

She’s half white with dyed blond hair. Pretty gal. According to the article, she grew up in FL.

Not sure why people are all of the sudden Puerto Rican or black (Obama) other than when a social or political point is being emphasized.

Puerto Rico is one of the winningest “countries” in Miss Universe history? Interesting that for some purposes, Puerto Rico is considered a separate country.

Who originally populated the island in 1491?
A central/south American Indian tribe almost certainly, but did many (or any recognizable families or individuala at all) survive the next centuries of disease and wars and hurricanes?

At first I thought it was the Miss America contestant and I thought “oh, so she’s probably got horned rim glasses, pimples, and wears lots of baggy flannel to impress Gretchen Carlson’s idea of a modern beauty queen. I’ll pass on this thread.” Then I realized it was Miss Universe and everything changed....

A Puerto Rican is just a person from Puerto Rico, the way a Floridian is just a person from Florida. (Yes, including “Florida Man” and the even scarier “Florida Woman”...).

The Dems have worked very hard to try to convert them into an ethnicity or some other identifiable bloc, but it’s really not possible. They’re just Americans from Puerto Rico, and as you say, they can look like anything.

Whatever they are, and whatever their ‘ethnicity’ or color or culture....

“they” were called the “most perfect humans” by a university research, because of their mix of ancestries and cultures.

Her mother Belinda is my high school friend - we both graduated in 1984 from Colegio El Buen Pastor in Guaynabo. I can’t tell you how heartbroken and pissed off she is about all of this. Madison speaks good Spanish. Like I told Beli the other day: “Haters Gonna Hate. She’ll need to speak English in Miss Universe, so this is a gigantic waste of time!”

And I do think she’s got a big chance of becoming Miss Universe. She reminds me of Irene Saez Conde, Miss Universe 1981, from Venezuela.
