Our brains appear uniquely tuned for musical pitch
medical xpress ^ | 10 June 2019 | National Institutes of Health

"We found that a certain region of our brains has a stronger preference for sounds with pitch than macaque monkey brains,"

To test this, the researchers played a series of harmonic sounds, or tones, to healthy volunteers and monkeys. Meanwhile, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to monitor brain activity in response to the sounds. The researchers also monitored brain activity in response to sounds of toneless noises that were designed to match the frequency levels of each tone played.

"We found that human and monkey brains had very similar responses to sounds in any given frequency range. It's when we added tonal structure to the sounds that some of these same regions of the human brain became more responsive,"

"This finding suggests that speech and music may have fundamentally changed the way our brain processes pitch,"

Some old instruments cannot be tuned to A440.

My question has long been: What happens to the F# buzz at a lower tunung point?

Man were these folks off the boat?? :)

Only the oldest still do that and A FEW 2nd generation (which is me).

I have a few friends that do it but they still speak Italian as well as they speak English (they speak English with no accent as they are second generation also) and visit Italy regularly.

They are the die hards :)

I fall somewhere in between.

My nephews and nieces? Forget about it.

They might as well be WASPs instead of WOPs lol

According to some of my past private research, the diatonic seven-tone major scale was used in Babylon.

My music history professor, an expert on Mozart, said baby Wolfgang cried in his crib when he heard Minor, and laughed when he heard Major.

The idea that humans respond consistently and predictably to certain musical conventions - e.g., minor scale and/or descending scale evoke melancholy - is called: The Doctrine of Affects (affections: emotions).

It was written by STEPHEN FOSTER and Al Jolson does a turn ( almost the leading man ) in one of the three movies about Foster. Two of these movies, SWANEE RIVER ( the one in which Jolson does a start turn ) and I DREAM OF JEANIE contain wonderful, full on minstrel shows; yes, done in blackface, which was NEVER meant as an insult!

I DREAM OF JEANIE can be watched on line, via YouTube.

If I could really pick out voices from the crashing noise, a new pair might be interesting.

With each new set, they give me a worksheet of tests for the new aids.
First up, was go out to eat in a noisy restaurant. I still remember it! The busboy loading dishes in a small tub on a stand, everyone talking...
I was even hearing conversations behind me!
The noise canceling function worked well, the speech recognition zoomed in on my wife and I could hear her!
Taking my notes back to the audiologist and she changed the voice zoom to straight ahead and 45 degrees on the sides.
I think she left some rear pickup for safety reasons.

All that and they are waterproof!
The rain will kill the battery but not the aid.

I go to Easterseals, they say any issues to bring them back. No hype, no push.
After the exam, she presented a list of possible devices that would work with my impairment with prices.
I told her I did not care about ‘looks’, I wanted function and waterproof(previous ones had been rained out a few times). Because I paid for good insurance I went Cadillac.

Totally happy with them, they are amazing.

Six or seven years and still work fine, they reprogram them as my hearing changes.

The doctrine of the affections, also known as the doctrine of affects, doctrine of the passions, theory of the affects,

Good thing I’m retired ‘cause it’s crazy late, nighttime.

This is fascinating.

If you like Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, you should give his Piano Concerto in F a try. Very pretty!

What they need to do next is to raise some monkeys with daily music from birth. When they are mature, then try these tests on them. Maybe the brain has a need to respond to music early in its formation.

Oh, I have had some doozies of my own, believe me. Reminds us that we’re human — and makes us wish for an “edit” option on FR.

What brand do you have? model?
I wear two Phonak Bolero Q, M13, behind the ear with an ear mold.
I wanted the best performance, without concern for appearance. Yes, they make little tiny ones that are mostly concealed in the ear.
I have been wearing them for years, no problems and have them reprogramed every other year. There are newer models that replaced this one.

I also have the complete ensemble, Bluetooth adapter, TV adapter, and remoter speaker rig(A small Mic that transmits directly into my aids,100ft range good for lectures and large meetings, just remember to bring it home).
The pair before were Oticon Scynros, very good and maybe better at noise canceling, but not waterproof.

That said, my audiologist matches my hearing profile with a handful of aids for me to review the feature set, and select.

The key is finding a trustworthy audiologist.
That is willing to take some time to dial them in, I have to take notes about the performance I’m looking for and she programs them.

Mine are optimized for speech with three settings, normal, loud and car with windows down. At the push of a button on the aid. Many settings available, but I wanted it simple.

They told me right up front that if not set up perfectly, many aids are placed in a drawer and NEVER USED.

A good friend went for aids and his insurance recommended a place in a far off suburb. I said you will be going back and forth.
They told him one or two adjustments, and he would be good to go. Less than a year and into the drawer.

I use Easterseals in the Chicago suburbs and I think they are great!

NB: Can’t sing, can’t dance and cannot carry a tune in a bucket! Also, monster hearing aids since RVN.
But I do know what I like.

And I like to know a bit of the old underlying form.
I do not have the time or background, so just a peek under the hood.

“Affections are not the same as emotions; however, they are a spiritual movement of the mind”

“Affections, inconjunction with the four temperaments and body humors, thusly result in specific emotional reactions inlisteners”

“...The sounds of this natural phenomenon overtake him, producing in his body a sympathetic resonance—a sudden, gripping, visceral reaction that he cannot explain.”

This almost feels like an archetype.

Whatever it may be, it is fun reading about it, just a little bit.

Thanks.

I dunno. Ya just picture a guy with the FR name dp0622...

I picture a guy I worked for long ago.
Very large Played football for Philadelphia in the 1930s.
Very Italian and a real gentleman, with a great sense of humor. Oh, he could laugh!

One day I said, Joe with all the money you made playing football why are you still working? (at age 67)

Big DEEP laugh and he says Grunt, Grunt, Grunt let me tell you...
He said not only did they not always get paid and they were to receive train fare to the next game, maybe. Even if they were paid they would HITCHHIKE to the next game!

Not exactly big bucks!

He was a joy to work for.
