A Memorial Day question about RVN JUNGLE ROT. Did you get rid of it? Forever? How?
Most of the Grunts I have known and many others acquired this personal reminder of RVN.
Because of a head wound and no insurance, I used the VA for a few years and they provided a medication. After lucking into a solid health plan I went a Dermatologist once a month for a few years, it turned out he was a schemer. Last visit he was on vacation, his stand in said , the only to get rid of it was to shower and change clothes three times a day! And that was a maybe.
My father in law was a Physician, so he would call in the same prescription (Tri-???Something). Worked but it never ever disappeared.
A few of years ago the Pharmacist, a former RVN guy, said there is newer and better stuff and it is over the counter, no script needed. He recommended tow different products. LAMISIL!!! It worked well!!! But not a permanent solution? Returns every couple of weeks.
A year back I was bushwhacked by poison ivy, head eyes This Dermatologist proscribed TACROLIMUS 0.1%. for both problems. It worked like a champ!!!
And just now a year later, IT IS BACK???
I work out four times a week , bike, rollers spin bike, rower...always sweat like a horse, everything soaked, puddles under the rollers.
Has anyone found a permanent cure for jungle rot???
Yes, it is a ‘treatment’ which garners many raised eyebrows and the natural -at least to me- why not?
For a cat bite or ‘deep scratch’ I will flush it with hot water, peroxide or alcohol, ‘expose’ it to air while at home and fill the crater with Neosporin (Best invention in my lifetime) and bandaid when leaving house.
When first scab grows over, pull and what is exposed gets hot water, shot of own nectar, neosporin cover and leave it along.
Watch for ‘red streaks’ usually none - if find pull scab and repeat process....usually it will heal within a week and no vision of scar... of course my hands so rough and weatherbeaten don’t notice the ‘scars’.
Speaking of ‘natural cures’, reminds me of Sailor and soldier in head getting ready to leave, the soldier hits the water while the sailor smooths his hair, adjusts his jumper and starts to leave.
Soldier-In the Army they teach us to wash our hands after taking a whizz.
Sailor-In the Navy they teach us to not pee on our hands.
As to your ‘query’ why not? When all else fails etc etc etc.
Socks as medication? Payroll? Whomever is hosting your Memorial Day get together had better cut you off. You are getting belligerently drunk. Next thing you know you will be punching grandma.
The Black Watch
Yup. that is the theory - patiently waiting to attack in your BVD’s
Lamisil also comes in indigestible form and may provide long-term relief by killing off the systemic fungus.
My recommendation is Pau D’Arco.
Get the extract for $13. One dropper in 8 oz. Liquid per day x 6 weeks. Bottle lasts about a week. If it can kill cancer it can be good at this.

Pau DArco
Interesting stuff.
Reading around, it is well recommended.
Suprised that I’d never run across it, I thought that my friends had tried most everything?
Have you or a friend ever used it for jungle rot?
Thanks!
I’ve been rereading this thread to work up a new plan of attack on the rot.
Forever I thought it was systemic and swimming in my circulatory system.
The Dermatologist says no.
Therefore it must be on my skin and clothes.
And a wash is the way to go.
My question is do you do a final wash with the bleach solution and then dry.
OR, water for a final rinse before drying?
Thank you!
I only use the bleached water on the way into the shower. Just a quick scrub once a day when “it” is under control and a full minute or longer anytime I feel it coming back or when that slime layer starts to appear. You have to physically remove that slime layer as that’s what keeps the fungus underneath moist.
Thanks
Haven’t used is as an antifungal. Helped save my life from neck cancer. Worked for my best friend’s father and sister in-law. Saved my Uncle (golf ball tumor in sm. intestine).

Pau d’Arco
Some very interesting stuff!
Over the years and many buddies with the same problem, I thought I had heard of most and tried many.
This is one I had not run across before this thread.
Someone else also mentioned it.
A friend picked up the rot in Panama, I wondered what the locals did for it?
I’m thinking this is what they use?
Now convinced that the fungi survive on my skin, waiting for warm and wet, then BANG!
Now I trying washes for a couple of weeks each and see what happens.
I have had it for 50 years, no big rush.
Pau d’Arco is on my list.
Thank you very much for your help.
Like you, I’ve tried everything for nam induced jungle rot...
Just recently I’ve been having great success with a Walmart brand (Equate) called “Diaper Rash Ointment”. It’s a knok off of Desenex. Nearly the same ingredients as far as I can tell.
Try it! Let me know if it helps you as well...
First I must apologize for not responding quickly.
Somehow I simply missed it??
I did lots of reading and headed over to Walmart and stocked up.
Tinea infections=RINGWORM of some type.
I wanted to try each one for a week and take notes.
And hopefully, pick a good one from the bunch.
HERE IS WHERE I’AM AT:
Tolnaftate 1% OTC Spray Powder $3/150g Best to date, mostly clear in three days.
Equate Athlete’s Foot Liquid Antifungal Spray, Tolnaftate 1%
The only nonprescription agent approved for both preventing and treating tinea infections.

Miconazole Nitrate 2% OTC Desenex Powder $5/85g Works well but does NOT finish it off.
Terbinafine Hydrochloride Cream 1% OTC Lamcil $6/50g Works well but does NOT finish it off. Flares up on long hot days.
Clotrimazole Cream USP 1% OTC NO CHANGE after five days, and maybe worse. Gaining large dark purple spots!!!
Comes out very well in real-world tests/// I have yet to try it.
Butenafine Hydrochloride Cream 1% OTC $5 / 12g

Still, have two Rx prescription products to try.
SOAP
The dermatologist recommended using a mild soap, I DID NOT THINK TO ASK FOR A RECOMMENDATION???
Been using Dial Gold for a long time. Switched to Irish Spring Wash 5. Checking the PH by washing hands as normal ‘feeling’ mix. I see Dial=8 and Irish=6.
Yes very subjective.
I’m certain the type of soap is connected to the outcome, unsure if PH is the correct approach?
It is reported that creams are more effective than powders, so I will be moving to all creams and perhaps a powder as a preventive?
Hoping to find a PERMANENT solution, have read that it has a high rate of recurrence, and that has been my experience.
Also, diaper rash and yeast infections are closely related if not the same problem.
