If the battle of Winterfell disappointed by failing to provide an adequate death list, one may well assume the relentless bloodshed that underpinned Sunday evenings episode of Game of Thrones might appease its increasingly hard to please fan-base. But despite the demise of several key players, viewers were once again left to express their frustration, confusion and anger over what many regarded as an underwhelming penultimate instalment in the long-running fantasy drama.

I can't see him doing even that now.
GOTs entire theme has been lineage to the throne. Daenerys last comments to Jon were telling, she wanted love. The Lannister line to the throne has ended, Cerseis incestual unborn child is dead. Daenerys and Jons incestual unborn child would leave little doubt as to who would inherit the throne in the future and tie Jon and Daenerys together forever.
It is a common lament of creative writers that endings are hard. The GOT writers took care to provide grace moments and goodbyes for many minor characters. The problem is that the looming showdown between Dany and Jon draws attention from other points of drama, which in turn seem pale diversions until that is resolved.
The entire series built toward last night’s battle. I am surprised at your disappointment,.
Danaerys doesn't think it's a big deal because she was raised as a Targaeryen right from birth, and so believes incest is no big deal. So while she doesn't have an issue marrying/having sex with her nephew, Jon very clearly considers that to be a deal-killer.
I think Jamie was always dirty. His venture into the light had to be temporary. Anything else would be like expecting Darth Vader to become an Apostle.
he should have got busy faster if he wanted to control the narrative or put it in the contract. Once the series started they were headed down the track and on a schedule.
I agree with your analysis. Dany has been compassionate in the past but this time she is the only one who saw what had to happen. The people Cersi used to shield her were sacrificed because this is what you have to do with a people who would use innocents to save themselves. Kings Landing needed to be cleansed by fire, and it was. Dany eliminated all directions of escape for Cersi and then destroyed the palace.
Jon was willing to accept the surrender of Cersi’s army, but they had in fact been following Cersi all along. Cersi showed that she would not have given anyone quarter if she had prevailed. In Lonesome Dove we learned that if you ride with horse thieves you will hang with horse thieves.
Tyrion betrayed Dany for the final time and he will pay for it, and with him will go the Lanister line. His voice of compassion for the innocents of King’s Landing was a valid emotion, but in the end he was willing to let Jaime and Cersi go somewhere else and try to have a new life. Wrong idea.
Arya has in fact chosen to forget her “list” but she is also not going to try to punish Dany, she will accept whatever Jon wishes. I believe he will realize that Dany was correct in eliminating the evil that Kings Landing represented. Recall that Cersi did not join in the defense of the kingdom when the Night King was just about to finish them all. (How could anyone stand against a force that could resurrect the dead?)
The only true leader was the one who did what needed to be done. Daenerys will take the restored throne.
he was in love with his sister as was I. Bad girls and all that
The new queen will be lonely on the iron throne
You nailed it. Good job.
Jon was willing to accept the surrender of Cersis army, but they had in fact been following Cersi all along. Cersi showed that she would not have given anyone quarter if she had prevailed. In Lonesome Dove we learned that if you ride with horse thieves you will hang with horse thieves.
Except by the time those bells rang, the Golden Company mercenaries were completely destroyed, and the Lannister troops in the city had thrown down their weapons. The actual fighting was over. She literally had no soldiers left other than a half-dozen Queensguard. There was nothing left to stop the UnSullied from marching right into the Red Keep and grabbing her.
Even if she though she didn't want to take any chance that Cersei might be left alive, the most she had to do was take her dragon and destroy the Red Keep itself. But instead, she took that dragon and literally targeted all the civilians and private homes between the walls and the Red Keep. There is no conceivable moral justification for her murdering over a hundred thousand civilians given that the fighting was over.
Disagree. I have been watching her descent for a couple of seasons now. Dany just plain snapped. She wasn't satisfied with just winning a battle. She wanted blood-thirsty revenge and there was no indication at all that Jon Snow will come to any realization in favor of the now "mad queen". Dany can not be trusted with the dragon nor with Greyworm at her side.
But also now, I am curious as to where Bronn fits in all this? If Tyrion dies, Bronn doesn't get Highgarden. Will Bronn show up and effect the outcome? Does he save Tyrion from Daenerys?
I hadn’t thought of that. I would be unhappy with such a “slick gimmick”. Danaerys goes all Darth Vader and tells Tyrion “You have failed me for the last time!” But suddenly Bronn shows up and kills her with a crossbow and cracks, “I’m just making sure I get my castle.”
That would be bad. But I can see it happening.
I think this guy hits it out of the park with his review:
It isnt that Dany slid into madness. Its that they did not build into it with the writing and it came off as rushed. Just three episodes ago she was riding her dragon with Jon and wishing they could just disappear.
I just don’t care. I watched the first season and then lost interest. Maybe the dragon will kill everyone and be the king.
Yes. A slow approach would have been better.
The loss of Jorah could be shown to devastate her.
The loss of Rhaegel could be shown to have her teetering on the edge.
The loss of Missandei could be shown to have her slide into a whole new personality.
The betrayal of Varys could be shown to have her despise everyone in Westeros.
The writers sort of “went there” but it looks rushed and fails to show a sufficient descent into madness. It just really comes across as a plot twist: “And in this episode, Dany goes crazy!!”
Well, it seems not watching the series disqualifies you from meaningful comments. Do you vote that way as well?
Just thought of another way it might have been handled.
The siege of Kings Landing goes well, Jon and Greyworm confront the Lannister soldiers in the street. The Lannisters throw down their swords, and bells start ringing across the city. Everyone is relieved. Danny lands Drogon on top of a nearby wall and smiles at Jon and Greyworm. Victory!
And then a rogue Lannister soldier throws a spear and kills Greyworm as the bells continue to peal. Dany takes off and nukes the whole city.
Agree, I liked it. Expectations go to the moon on GOT.
