‘Lady and the Tramp’ Will Revamp Problematic Siamese Cat Song, Feature New Music From Janelle Monae
Variety ^ | May 6, 2019 | MATT DONNELLY and CHRIS WILLMAN

Grammy winner Janelle Monae will contribute new music to the Disney Plus streaming title “Lady and the Tramp,” in addition to her voice role in the live-action reboot.

Monae will perform two original songs for the film, led by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux. Monae’s artist collective Wondaland is also “reinventing” a track from the original 1955 animated movie, individuals close to the project said.

That would be “The Siamese Cat Song,” originally recorded by Peggy Lee for the feline duo Si and Am in the animated version. Those characters and their famous refrain — “We are Siamese if you please / We are Siamese if you don’t please” — have long been considered a cringe-worthy depiction of Asian culture.

““We are Siamese if you please / We are Siamese if you don’t please” — have long been considered a cringe-worthy depiction of Asian culture.”

In the words of Jayne Cobb...

“...dumba55 wogs!...”

The ONLY being who should be cringing would be a Siamese cat, at the oh so accurate depiction of that a55hole breed of cat. Conniving, haughty, arrogant, aloof, sneaky, and mean spirited almost to a critter. Never met one that wasn’t a “pet, but count your fingers” situation.

Overton knew his stuff!

Actually, it plays on the fact that CATS can be traitorous, sharp-toothed and slant-eyed or haven’t you ever run across one? If you know the movie, it is portrayed as the feline spirit versus canine sweetness and playfulness.

It’s a really cute song within the movie.

WTF do Siamese cats have to do with ‘Asian culture’? The world is run by retards.

REALLY?? You've got to be kidding me...

Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand, was formerly known as "Siam." The Siamese cat is one of the first distinctly recognized breeds of Asian cat. Derived from the Wichianmat landrace, one of several varieties of cat native to Thailand, the Siamese became one of the most popular breeds in Europe and North America in the 19th century.
Look carefully and hard at the word "Siamese." Keep looking.

Oh, I absolutely agree. It’s a play on stereotypes, ... But it is still a stereotype, and not at all a benign one.

Seriously? How long exactly? Since 2018 maybe?

Anything that depicts anything negatively should be banned from existence. Washington should be banned along with Jefferson and Jackson and Polk et al. Not!

I'll quote These are the jokes son. They were funny then, they are funny now.

Will “Anna and the King of Siam” be pulled from being shown?

"Those characters and their famous refrain...have long been considered a cringe-worthy depiction of Asian culture.”

I feel sorry for the upcoming generations... the "old white man" jokes are going to get old really quickly, especially since old white men won't be around anymore and the "Bureau of Culture" will act like all government agencies and be ineffective at getting out the revised list of approved jokes and memes .

They will long for the days of real comedy... and competent old white men.

Since the Star Wars sagas and the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit sagas it seems Hollywood cannot find enough creativity and just keeps remaking existing stories and make sure they are politically correct.

I quickly downloaded so I have a copy of it. Poor little snowflakes are triggered! Awwwww.

No one but total idiots ever thinks this is a true depiction of the Thai people.

Actually, when this song came out and I was a little kid, there were all sorts of wierd beliefs about Siamese cats among kids. Believe it or not, they were feared. Personally, I think it’s a funny-creepy song that will be hard to replace. I’m only saying that you can’t be surprised that it’s not PC.

And who says Italian restaurants have red checkered table cloths and serve spaghetti w/meatballs. I’m surprised the accidental kiss scene isnt interrupted with a mob hit. Very offensive scene.

How bad are these lyrics? I don’t call them bad at all:

The Siamese Cat Song
Peggy Lee

We are Siamese if you please
We are Siamese if you don’t please
We are former residents of Siam
There are no finer cat than I am

Do you see what I see with my eyes?
People have been baking up some pies
Peeping jumping up upon their window
Though delicious spice we could get into

Who is that who is living in that wire house
It must be a bird because it’s not a mouse
If we’re sneakin’ up upon it carefully
There will be some bird for you and some for me

Do you seeing that thing swimming round and round?
Maybe we could reaching in and make it drown
If we’re sneakin’ up upon it carefully
There will be some fish for you and some for me

Songwriters: Sonny Burke / Oliver Wallace / Peggy Lee
The Siamese Cat Song lyrics © Walt Disney Music Company

It’s a friggin’ cartoon—and a lot less stereotyped than many big name cartoon films released even in the last few years.

They should keep the cats Siamese, but change the plot.

One can say “You handsome man. Buffalo die at farm. Mother very sick. Please 50,000 baht.”

The other can say “You handsome man. House back in Isaan need new roof. Father very sick. Please 50,000 baht.”

Politics in cartoons is a disaster, cartoons that are left to being cartoons are wonderful. But alas, no such thing anymore.

“problematic” = leftist word which translates to “something about to be censored and / or banned”
