Eating your placenta provides no mental health benefits for new mothers, suggests new research from the University of British Columbia and the BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services Research Institute.
The study, published online today in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada, is the largest so far to look at the effects of eating ones placentaa practice known as placentophagy. Researchers used data from a 10-year genetic study involving 138 women with a history of mood disorders and compared data on outcomes between those who had eaten their placenta and those who had not.
When you ask women why theyre consuming their placenta, many will say that they think it will help improve their mood in the postpartum period, said Jehannine Austin, professor in the UBC faculty of medicine, the executive director of the research institute and lead investigator of the study. But there has been no research evidence showing that it really works, and our new study adds weight to this idea.
Eating ones placenta following childbirth is a growing trend, with many celebrities claiming that the practice provided them with health benefits, including preventing postpartum depression. However, previous studies have shown that consuming human placenta poses risks for mothers and their babies, including viral and bacterial infections.
Given the health risks associated with consuming your placenta, and the absence of detectable benefits, we strongly recommend women do not, and instead look to other mental wellness resources Jehannine Austin, professor in the UBC faculty of medicine
The study also showed that women who consumed their placentas did not have more energy, had no increase in their vitamin B12 levels, and required no less lactation assistance than women who consumed their placentas.
Austin recommends that women who are concerned about postpartum depression speak with their doctor, midwife, or a public health nurse. Additionally, British Columbian women can access services through the Pacific Post Partum Support Society and the Reproductive Mental Health program at BC Childrens Hospital.
“We should start a rumor on leftist forums that if you eat your boogers it will improve your mental health.”
Not a rumor; old news at least for improving physical health. I recall some physicians coming out and saying that if you did that, you’d self-inoculate and have less chance of catching flu, etc. A loooong time ago — maybe 30 years.
They wouldn’t let me abort.
So I kept the placenta and
threw the baby away.
Many animals eat the placenta after birth. I believe this is a natural reaction to removing anything that a predator can smell, more than a health benefit.
I’ve also noticed a cow will also eat paper towels in which a veterinarian or farmer has used to wipe down the new born calf.
There was a cartoon about steamed placenta with organic onions in the National Lampoon, early 70’s. I know mama cows consume it after calving, having seen it more than once on a cattle ranch.
Probably better than pesto.
We in Animal Science knew this was idiocy forty years ago.
And it cures cancer and makes you prettier! (lets make sure this spreads very far!)
Tom Cruise hardest hit.
It’s like Catch-22 in reverse.
...and if you’re eating placentas, you NEED mental health benefits.
“In other news, semen is high in zinc, which is believed to be an antioxidant and slows down the aging process of skin and muscles.”
...and cures breast cancer.
“Caption time”
“Hey, that was fun...are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“What is this? another idiot fad? did some mental midget write a book Your Placenta and You?”
And democrat women swallowed it...so to speak.
That was the censored SNL skit.
“...There was a cartoon about steamed placenta with organic onions...”
And some Chianti to wash it down.
Love polenta!
That’s unfortunate, because people who are eating placentas really are in need of some mental health benefits.
“I know mama cows consume it after calving, having seen it more than once on a cattle ranch.”
Yeah, well, dogs eat their own vomit and excrement, I’ve seen that more than once as well.
So, what does a leftie do if she’s a vegan?
