Last year, my son played golf at a golf course that part of it is inside the brickyard ?
about 15 years ago, my wife's cousin's son had what some consider the worst crash ever at the brickyard.
Racing since he was 6 years old or so. At 24 years old - finally made it to the big time, getting married in a few months, living in Vegas, needle is definitely pointing up for this head on straight, good looking, smart, personable kid. - dead at 26 years old.
Finished 7th in the previous year's Indy. Took Al Unser Jr.’s place when Unser went to rehab.
In a private venture by the team owner, he was testing tires for one of the team's indy cars at the Indy Speedway and he spun out and went airborne at about 200mph and caught the catch fence around turn 3.
Rumors are, not only the car, but he disintegrated.
There was supposedly video but everything was confiscated by the owner of the race track.
The Indy 500 has never been on my\our bucket list. Probably less so since then.

Listening to Roger Peski at the WH. Reminds me of a story on my dad. Dad and mom went to Canada to a fishing lodge. At the same lodge was a group of men hunting moose. The men had not even seen a moose and mom and dad saw several daily. They often discussed their adventures during dinner. One of the men admitted he wasn’t much of a hunter and wished he was fishing with dad.
So dad took him out. Dad asked him what he did He replied he raced cars. Dad asked,”what do you do for a living?”
It was Mario Andretti. He wrote dad a nice picture postcard when they got back home.
Needless to say although we annually listened to the 500, dad wasn’t much of a fan.
