“She withheld information and lied repeatedly about these contacts. Violations of the public’s trust are an affront to our citizens and to all those who honor their oaths. With this guilty plea we are one step closer to imposing justice for these dishonorable criminal acts.”

“Candace Claiborne broke the public trust when she accepted gifts and money from foreign officials, and then lied about it to State Department background investigators,” said Liu. “The US will continue to seek to hold accountable those who abuse their positions of trust.

“Candace Claiborne was entrusted with Top Secret information when she purposefully misled federal investigators about her repeated interactions with foreign contacts which violated her oath of office as a State Department employee,”

“The FBI will continue to investigate individuals who fail to report foreign contacts, which is a key indicator of potential insider threats posed by those in positions of public trust.”

“Our close working relationship with the FBI and the Department of Justice resulted in the conviction of Candace Claiborne who violated the public trust and damaged our national security,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary Colón.

Diplomatic Security will continue working with our law enforcement partners to vigorously defend the interests and security of the United States of America.”

Claiborne failed to report repeated contacts with two agents of the People’s Republic of China Intelligence Service, even though these agents provided tens of thousands of dollars in gifts and benefits to Claiborne and her family over five years.

DEAR LORD-over 5 years.

In exchange for these gifts and benefits, as stated in the plea documents, Claiborne provided copies of internal documents from the State Department on topics ranging from U.S. economic strategies to visits by dignitaries between the two countries.

Claiborne noted in her journal that she could “Generate 20k in 1 year” working with one of the PRC agents. That same agent at one point tasked her with providing internal U.S. Government analyses on a U.S.-Sino Strategic Economic Dialogue that had just concluded.

After the State Department and FBI investigators contacted her, Claiborne also instructed her co-conspirators to delete evidence connecting her to the PRC agents. She was arrested on March 28, 2017, following a law enforcement investigation.

NIKK..I posted this info. YESTERDAY...20) On June 12, 2017 President Trump nominated his first wave of US Attorney candidates.

Jessie Liu, Dep. General Counsel for the US Treasury, was nominated by Trump to replace Phillips.

Liu had also met with Trump prior to her nomination.

Liu was confirmed on Sept. 25, 2017.27) On March 5, 2019, President Trump nominated Liu for the 3rd highest post at DOJ - associate attorney general. Liu had been specifically recommended for the post by AG Barr: “It is clear that she will be an outstanding addition to our leadership team at the Department.”

28) Liu’s nomination fell through on March 28, 2019 due to her prior role as vp of Ntl Assoc of Women Lawyers - which supported abortion rights. Sen. Mike Lee led the opposition to her nomination.

29) AG Barr expressed his displeasure: “She has been an outstanding United States attorney and would have made an outstanding associate attorney general. I have zero doubt she would have faithfully executed my priorities and advanced my rule-of-law agenda.”

30) Barr then appointed Liu to lead the AG Advisory Committee, which counsels the AG on policy, procedure and management matters that affect federal prosecutors. Barr said he gave Ms. Liu the post so she could............ “play a broader role in the department.”........... John Huber is vice-chair.

31) One of the cases Liu inherited as the U.S. Attorney for D.C. from Channing Phillips was the prosecution of Imran Awan. Awan had pleaded guilty on July 3, 2018, to a federal charge stemming from a false statement made on a home equity loan.

32) A grand jury had been sworn in on Nov. 13, 2016, and formal charges were filed on on Aug. 17, 2017—prior to Liu’s Sept. 25, 2017, confirmation as U.S. attorney.

Phillips’s office had brought no charges against Awan related to allegations of hacking House IT systems.

The DOJ only went public with this prosecution of a big DC power player when they unsealed the indictment.

They followed their standard procedure: no announcement of the start of the investigation, assignment of a US Attorney/s, empaneling of a grand jury to hear the case, etc.
