NEW YORK Smartphones and digital technology are supposed to make our lives easier, but for young adults, it seems that things may only be getting tougher and for a slew of reasons. According to one recent survey, about 3 out of 5 millennials (58%) feel life is more stressful right now than ever before.
In fact, the survey of 2,000 American millennials, commissioned by CBD oil company Endoca, reveals that one-third of millennials believe their lives are more stressful than the average persons life.
The survey also pointed to numerous causes of the frustration for this young segment. Many feel their overall stress level is caused by the accumulation of daily micro-stressors seemingly trivial experiences such as being stuck in traffic, waiting for appointments, or various smartphone issues.
For example, although losing ones wallet or credit card ranked as the top source of stress for respondents, 1 in 5 say theyd be even more apoplectic if their smartphone screen broke. For more than 2 in 5 millennials (41%), a damaged phone screen is worse than seeing their check engine light flash on in the car.
Meanwhile, getting into an argument with a partner was the second greatest source of stress for participants overall, but nearly 1 in 5 agreed that getting zero likes on a social media post is a more stress-inducing experience. One-third feel that having their phone die is a more miserable scenario than seeing a fraudulent charge on their credit card bill. (For good measure, the researchers found that the average remaining-battery percentage for when millennials begin to feel stress is 23%.)
And while gridlock was the third most common cause of stress for young adults, 30% of those surveyed agreed that slow WiFi was even more stressful than slow traffic.
About half of the survey respondents said they dont feel they deal with stress well in general, and two-thirds said theyd like to find more coping methods.
Stress isnt an abstract issue its a significant problem and doesnt necessarily have to be caused by one large inciting incident, says Henry Vincenty, CEO of Endoca, in a statement. No matter whats causing our stress, we should take care to be proactive about finding solutions before it begins affecting our health.
Researchers compiled the top 20 list of stressors for millennials (see below), and though arriving first to a party did not make the list, 22% of participants find that experience to be more brutal than a job interview. Another 35% find that sticking to plans is more stressful than missing out on them.
As for how all this stress is affecting millennials, the survey found that participants struggled to fall asleep nearly three nights per week about 138 nights each year because of the various issues.
Here are the top 20 stressful scenarios reported by millennials:
1. Losing wallet/credit card 2. Arguing with partner 3. Commute/traffic delays 4. Losing phone 5. Arriving late to work 6. Slow WiFi 7. Phone battery dying 8. Forgetting passwords 9. Credit card fraud 10. Forgetting phone charger 11. Losing/misplacing keys 12. Paying bills 13. Job interviews 14. Phone screen breaking 15. Credit card bills 16. Check engine light coming on 17. School loan payments 18. Job security 19. Choosing what to wear 20. Washing dishes
A lot of them saw their older siblings go to war in Iraq, Afghanistan. They saw a billion dollar bailout. They saw the GOP decline in the late 2000s.
I’m a millennial and I hate most of my generation for precisely the reason that they seem to lack any sense of their true position in life whether looked at from a historical or current perspective.
BTW, the next time someone thinks this is just young people being young people, I want them to think about how old millennials actually are. While the youngest in the bracket are early 20s, the oldest millennials are now in their mid-to-late 30s. Many of these people are not growing out of it and that concerns me.
early 1964.....
Senior level engineering courses, graduating, job interviews, getting married, moving to ? where, buying stuff for an apartment.
No stress there.
Stress? having a life with no work and no challenges is the real stress! Giving people everything “free” induces stress. Absolving people of responsibility for their actions leads to stress. Rewarding indolence brings stress. Punishing productivity causes stress.
The smartphone doesn’t help or hinder. It is a tool that can be used in various ways. For many it provides a way to retreat from one’s surroundings. The need to do that is a problem. The smartphone didn’t cause it.
Good heavens.......................’Snowflakes’ doesn’t even BEGIN to describe these people. The economy is doing great, there are more jobs than people for the first time in decades, and the future is brighter now than it ever has been. No recession, no depression, no major war going on, nothing to stop these idiots from achieving a spectacular career....................
A lifeless lot whiners united they met the no coddling zone panic ensues.
POOR BABIES! /s
LOL! What a joke.
Firstly, how the hell would they know? Secondly......gee, ya think being sent off to war, or facing the very real threat of starvation not to mention no modern medicine - so you knew any serious injury or illness was likely fatal, or the very real risk of being eaten by wild animals mightve been a little bit stressful?
Look, I realize saying the younger generation is soft is standard get off my lawn fare and is as old as can be but really......damn. They really are incredibly soft. I blame baby boomers and the socialists in teaching for it. Its truly sickening.
Quite agree, I’m nearly 71, when I was a young mom working, I worked sick, in pain, kept house, did lawn, all the work of 2 parents. I threw the rotten SOB child abuser out and divorced him. Took a decade to find a decent one for 23 yrs.
...and how many of them do you think took this survey or just laughed at the premise and moved on?
I was in line trying to get gasoline at Costco yesterday. Initially it looked like things were progressing fairly well. But then I noticed that after a couple minutes the young woman who was parked in front of the rear pump was still sitting in her hybrid texting on her phone instead of pumping gas. After the F350 in front of her finished filling his megatank, the pickup in front of me drove around her to the forward pump. She finally put the spigot in her fill hole and then got back in her car and continued texting. As I drove around her I noticed that her pump had clicked off and she hadn’t noticed. So after I got my pump going. I walked back and tapped on her window. This startled her and she rolled her window down. I told her that her pump had clicked off. She told me to f*** off. I wonder if the poor little darling lost sleep over our confrontation that night.
1. Losing wallet/credit card
Hasn’t happened, reissuing credit card is easy. Getting another driver’s license is a pain in the butt.
2. Arguing with partner
...It happens but I’m not adverse to just moving along. I learned that in the military you cannot let somebody get on your nerves, you resolve and you move along because you got other things to do, the mission always comes first and it’s true in marriage - the mission i.e. the marriage always comes first.
3. Commute/traffic delays
Live close to work or a variance in transportation possibilities, or get used to it.
4. Losing phone
Purchase phones u can actually afford, but get a plan to cover damages or loss if you are that worried about it.
5. Arriving late to work
It happens, leave early
6. Slow WiFi
Hmmm. Go hit the chore list or do the dishes.
7. Phone battery dying
My new cheap phone has incredible batt life. I recharge at 15 to 18 percent.
8. Forgetting passwords
Dont use Cheyanne mountain grade passwords.
9. Credit card fraud
It sux but is not insumountible, deal directly with the credit card company. At even the slightest whiff of suspicion call the cc company and get them to reissue. They are more than happy to help. Make sure you and the spouse have different cc numbers.
10. Forgetting phone charger
They are everywhere... cheap too.
11. Losing/misplacing keys
Another situation that sux... keep spares.
12. Paying bills
Just do it
13. Job interviews
Just be yourself
14. Phone screen breaking
See 4 above. I have tried to DIY and it didn’t work out. Purchase a rugged protective case with screen protection.
15. Credit card bills
Only buy as much on a credit card as you can afford per month. If you’re going to make a big expenditure make sure you have the adequate funds in the bank to pay the credit card off at the end of the month. Get card that gives you points for your purchases. Go look at clarkhoward.com - he’s got all the information you would ever want to read about it.
16. Check engine light coming on
It used to be that the check engine light was basically for EPA emissions notifications. But that’s changed... What you need to do is go to buy a 15 to $30 code reader and plug it into your plug under the dash when you get a check engine light and read the code go online and look the coat up it could be a freaking gas cap that needs replacing because your EFI is not maintaining the proper pressure because the gas cap is allowing the system to depressurize.
17. School loan payments
Keep your nose clean in high school stay in shape join the military and get all kinds of educational benefits.
I used to ride the train to work in DC with a lawyer and one day he announced that he had finally paid off his education bill after 20 years I think he was around 40 something, he said if he had to do it all over again he would have picked another less expensive law school opportunity other than Georgetown University which is where he went, and by doing so would have paid off his student loans years before. He said there wasn’t any difference for 95% of later work out there. And any accredited school would have sufficed.
18. Job security
That’s a tough one... If you go above and beyond you probably will never get pink slipped. Unless the company goes under and then you have a good recommendation when you go out looking for work. Thank God I never really was faced with that but I cannot imagine the amount of stress at that would cause especially if you’re over extended.
A friend of my father’s told me to never rely on two jobs to meet the bills. In other words... if you have one job and your spouse has a job - one of those paychecks should cover everything or else you’re hanging it out there waiting for something to get lopped off.
19. Choosing what to wear
I can’t imagine that ever happening - go read Dress For Success and put a functionally versatile wardrobe together.
If you’re working any casuals as a musician you will need a tux. With two coats one black and one white. I’ve had the same tux for many years and because I exercise and maintain a moderate diet I can still fit into that damn tux.
20. Washing dishes
Clean as you go. Or... see number 6
Cheers
Adulting is hard. Welcome to the party pal.
>>>Plenty if Millennials serves in Afghanistan and Iraq fwiw<<<
Which accounts for the two out of five who don’t think Life is tougher than ever before.
Snowflakes being so fragile are susceptible to the slightest amount stress.
Leave my phone on Do Not Disturb and just check it occasionally.
I have no cable on my tv except thru the Spectrum app. Rarely watch it and mostly stream everything.
I watch 0, yeah 0, news. Have found I just don’t need the aggravation.
I still have FB but really only to stay in touch with the family back east. Check it each morning and just scroll thru the BS. Not in any groups or news or....
Starting a new biz which is rather stressful right now meeting all the regs etc. but once it’s up and running smoothly turning it over to my niece and daughter.
Life is good! And so much better since I’ve cut out all the news crap.
It’s all just a frame of mind. If you let small issues of reality stress you, small issues of reality are going to stress you. They do it to themselves, they create huge issues out of nothingburgers. lol
Volunteers are not drafted.
My father would just laugh from behind his privilege.
His first jobs was a breaker in the mines.
His second job was filling and driving coal carts out of the mine with a mule team.
His third job was in the Pacific during the War II with the 8th Army which was extended into 1950 to the War in Korea.
His 100 yard stare was from the mines. WW II saved his life.
(LOL)
