Study: High-carb, low-protein diets may extend lifespan

Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A nutrient once thought to be healthy if eaten in abundance may actually cut life short, a new study says.

A low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet has been linked to living longer and maintaining brain health, according to a study published this month in Current Biology.

Eating too much protein, Proud says, can speed up protein synthesis, which quickly causes a build-up of "faulty protein" -- leading to a likelihood of early death. The researchers tested this theory by feeding high protein diets to fruit flies and worms.

"Since this link also operates in humans, our findings show how lower protein consumption could promote longevity in people," Proud said.

However, Proud not only recommends eating less protein but also more carbohydrates, which many have long-associated with an unhealthy diet.

"Carbohydrates get a lot of bad press, especially in relation to dieting, but the key is balance and knowing the difference between 'good' carbs and 'bad' carbs," Proud said.

The regular unflavored plain Dannon yogurt has no added sugar just like always. I go through about a tub of it a week.

A varied diet is a healthy diet.

For fun I looked over the first page of responses and tried to categorize them:

true believers - 12
humorous - 12
common sense - 7
political - 6
helpful - 4
skeptical - 4
smart ass - 4

Your true believers are people who believe that refined sugar is the devil, or Atkins was a god.

Humorous are people who just trying to be funny.

Common sense are people like you who just state the facts and believe in moderation, etc.

Helpful are people who talk about what worked for them but are not really trying to push it is what is the answer for everyone.

Smart ass are just nasty responses that are not funny and do not contribute anything worthwhile to the discussion.

My other’s life changed when she changed doctors to
a FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE doctor's practice. MD + Nutritionist + Physical Thyripist who act as a team and diagnosed her problems Cilliac etc.. One of the things learned was that almost all -processed foods- in US, contain SUGAR & MSG . Post Raisen Bran has 19g of sugars in a 1 cup serving. Thats 4+ tsp ! Now we know why they use “grams” as a measurment. The rise of obisity is in proportion to the increase of these 2 ingrediants. MSG is a chemical that is addictive and should be treated as such. If yogurt is your thing , then try Oikus plain. We add blueberries for sweetness and grainy/seedy dry cereal to ea. cup. , Throttles uP!

Oh, yeah—those fruit fly and worm studies prove a lot about human longevity.

People (including myself) are very passionate about their diets. I try not to lecture but to state what has worked for me and let others decide for themselves. Also, I recognize that what works for me won’t necessary work for everybody else. But I do feel compassion for those who are obese and unhealthy because I’ve been there. I try to help those folks out. I guess if you are happy, healthy and full of energy, no matter what your diet is, never mind what I have to say and stick with it! If not, I have some suggestions that might help.

I went on a no carb, no sugar diet and lost 35 lbs in 2 months.

I reduced carbs and virtually eliminated sugar (while increasing protein and beneficial fats like avacados) and dropped 55 in 8 months. Also acid reflux that plagued me for years vanished. I think this study is BS.

Yep.. We just have to pay attention to how food makes us feel. Sounds like you eat the same foods I do.. If a meal has too much sugar or fat I’m immediately tired. Happy Health!

Another faulty “study”.
Eating too much of any 1 thing can lead to trouble. This “study” doesn’t add anything to the body of information that we already have

Thats not really correct. Fat protein and carb calories are not equal. Carbs (sugar) are the worse calories. They burn faster and spike your blood sugar. Fat is the best one as they burn longer. The optimal diet is a high fat low no carb diet.

Problem with a lot of high-fat processed foods, is they tend to have a lot of sodium.

Probably why eating a bag of pork rinds, isn’t the best idea.

If you aren’t missing animal protein you’re fantastic. For me, my hunger is not satisfied even if my stomach is full, without either animal protein or tofu. Allergic to nuts, I do eat seeds but in a meal quantity it doesn’t work, beans don’t work. Eggs and meat work best, cheese is so so. Tofu is fine and I make it every week and keep it around in gochugang korean style for quick snacks. I need 3 servings of protein a day.

I call BS..

When man began to farm, they grew shorter and started having all sorts of health issues compared to when they were hunter gatherers... claiming high carbs is healthier is flat out ludicrous.

Yes it allows more easy energy for the brain but wreaks all kinds of havoc on the rest of the body

Worked for my wife and I as well.
At 5’9” I weighed in at 210. Started Keto combined with regular exercise and consistently lost 5 lbs a week.
Now at 170. I never thought I would see that number on the scale again.
The only kinda downside was, we had to do some clothes shopping, but it sure felt real good to get into some Jean’s I haven’t been able to wear in almost 15 years.
