One account I heard was the 2 guys Smollet put up to this were actors from Nigeria. Maybe he fell for one of those Nigerian cash advance scams and made up this story to avoid the embarrassment? The details are very different, but at a higher abstract level, the pure arrogance, absolute absence of shame, sociopathic disregard for the consequences of one's actions on one's fellow man, bald face lying (watch his TV interview from the other day,) and Dateline-like criminal stupidity mixed with 2 ridiculous characters as supporting actors, is a lot like Pain and Gain.
