Jussie is/was a political hacktivist working in cahoots with both Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, supporting their “hate crimes” legislation. I don’t assume they would have known it is a hoax (though they both have some serious fakery in their own political histories), but they certainly jumped on board with toxic public statements before the thing had been investigated.

One account I heard was the 2 guys Smollet put up to this were actors from Nigeria. Maybe he fell for one of those Nigerian cash advance scams and made up this story to avoid the embarrassment? Even Lady Caca had the intellectual honesty to admit mental illness is rampant in the sleazy world of show biz.
Frankly it's far worse, because had he pulled this hoax off, it would have lent a serious dose of lie-fuel to a spirit destroying movement that is damaging to black kids' view of themselves and the world more than anyone else.
