Check your compass: The magnetic north pole is on the move

WASHINGTON (AP) - North isn't quite where it used to be.

Earth's north magnetic pole has been drifting so fast in the last few decades that scientists say that past estimates are no longer accurate enough for precise navigation. On Monday, they released an update of where magnetic north really was, nearly a year ahead of schedule.

I read yesterday on natgeo that they did blame Trump. More specifically they blamed Trumps government shutdown on the delay to issue new fixes and calculations for navigation equipment, gps and such. They even found some twerp science guy in Colorado who said as much because he was part of the fixit team. I hate these people.

Oh, and the poles have shifted before.

Global warming.
Climate change.

Or something.

The LED Compass in my car which normally reads “NW” or “SE” was showing “WTF?”.

If this keeps up I’m going to be forced to send yet another $10,000,000 check to Al Gore. Why in the heck can’t these guys stop this sort of thing.

I’m starting to think that I may not be getting my money’s worth from all of these donations.

Funny. I am a pilot and I know the difference between magnetic North and true North. It’s like the first thing you learn in private pilot ground school. It also varies by region.

How could a pole shift affect transformers? Please excuse my ignorance.

The earth is spinning like a top.

And if you ever saw a top spinning, you will se it occasionally wobbles and then returns to a stable spin, then it will wobble again. This is due to friction.

The only friction on the earth comes from the earths magnetic field interactions with the suns’ magnetic field.

I am very worried about if it will ‘wobble’, and if periodic wobbling is what causes massive flooding and land shifting.

In the fwiw department, airports may have to renumber their runways.

Except that airports don't label their runways based on magnetic North but rather geographic North. If geographic North became South then the Sun would start rising in the West.

But you were probably being sarcastic?

“It’s like the first thing you learn in private pilot ground school.”

And anybody who had to learn how to read a map in the military knows the correction is printed on every map with a graphic on how to apply the correction. We just think that technology like GPS has made us smarter when all it’s done is to remove some people’s ability to think.

Sorry, that was me. I tried pulling it over to my yard because I thought it would be neat. My wife ran out and made me stop but now I can’t stop it. Might be able to fix it this weekend.

I loved my Loran C. It just had a few patchy void areas in transition areas. Just as accurate as my localizer and VOR. More accurate than NDB.
