NASA’s spacecraft that landed on Mars on Monday has beamed back its first clear photo of the desolate Red Planet.
“There’s a quiet beauty here. Looking forward to exploring my new home,” NASA tweeted late Monday, hours after its new InSight lander touched down.
The image came after the rover had earlier sent back a somewhat blurry photo. The space agency said that in the interim, the spacecraft had opened its solar panels, which allowed it to recharge its batteries for the mission.

In a way, it's too bad that we can't land a probe on the planet Uranus, just for the jokes.
If one would take a few minutes to actually read about the mission, this flat desolate location, with few rocks, hills etc, was intentionally targeted to meet the mission requirements. The location is so flat they landed the craft with only about 2 degrees off from being level, which was also critical to the mission.

I remember watching the first Viking pictures from the surface -- the bandwidth was low, so every few minutes another strip would appear. These nailbiter rendezvous with Mars are nothing new, and success rate is not as great as it could be. The Mariner 4 mission was supposed to go into orbit and send back (b&W) pictures of the planet, but instead the trajectory was just a bit off, and the probe made a flyby instead, snapping pictures all the way along. The images, taken in the summer of 1965, were also breathtaking. :^) Showing a barren, cratered surface not unlike the Moon's, they blew apart the old claims of canals made by Giovanni Schiaparelli and Percival Lowell.

What does the sentence even mean? How do you "lose technology" when you have the hardware sitting in a museum and know exactly how it works, even if you have no current production line or tooling to build more?
NASA admitted a few years ago that none of its images of the earth from space are real. All are photoshopped composites.
