A three-month-old horse that lived up to 40,000 years ago has been discovered in the mysterious Batagai depression in Russias Yakutia region, nicknamed the Gateway to the Underworld.
The North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk published the first photo of the unique discovery, which was made together with scientists from Kindai University in Japan along with a crew from Fuji TV.
The horse was unearthed in perfect condition with its mane, tail and hair well preserved, as it was trapped in the permafrost for 30,000-40,000 years, scientists say. The discovery can help scientists to learn more about the environment of the time the foal lived, according to the head of the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk, Semyon Grigoryev.
This is the first find in the world of a pre-historic horse with such level of preservation and of such a young age, Grigoryev said.
The Batagai crater in Verkhoyansky District of Yakutia has baffled scientists, and the nature of the mysterious site of unusual shape is still a matter of discussion. The ancient crater is still growing and strange noises reportedly emerge nearby, which is why the place received its spooky nickname.
Perfect Condition! Tell the horses missing tail that.
That is new information to me.
Great! That means that they can now clone my old ass.....................
A horse is a horse, of course, of course, and is still just a horse, of course, no matter how long he is supposed, that is, to have been buried in permafrost of the earth, of course, even if he’s the famous little colt.
“It doesnt need more of me.”
Actually, it does.
You are intelligent enough to be a conservative, so you owe the gene pool as many offspring as you can manage.
BTW, due to mortality, replacement level is three children per couple. Two is losing ground.
God and/nature made that decision for us.
But i appreciate your faith in me!
New article with more pictures of the foal.
Thanks! I hope it can be cloned!...................
I find the whole thing fascinating.
The article states the foal was 98cm at the shoulder which I think is 36 inches.
Also states they believe it to be equus lambei which was only 4 foot tall.
“Based on the fossil records discovered in the Yukon, Equus lambei is believed to have been a small, slender, caballoid horse (about four ft tall), with a broad skull and a relatively long protocones”
Also states they believe the foal is approx. 2mos old. I’ve raised a lot of foals and I think it’s younger than that.
It will be really interesting to see what DNA says.
Would this place them akin to the present day Mongolian horse?
I’ve never own a horse but do love them.
I don’t know. Wikipedia says the Mongolian horse is 48 to 56 inches tall. That still makes this foal pretty tall for the breed. Now that’s jmo, I’m no scientist at all.
The foal was 3 ft tall, and an adult is only 4 foot tall?.........
Doesn’t make sense at all does it?
I'd saddle for a simple DNA breakdown.
Sadly, the foal died on the way to his Ed class..
Quit horsing around.........................
