America’s Next Civil War Will Be Worse Than Our Last
The American Spectator ^ | 07/26/18 | H. W. Crocker III

Posted on 07/26/2018 7:41:23 AM PDT by Enlightened1

In the summer of 1862, just weeks before the Battle of Sharpsburg (or Antietam) — the bloodiest single day of fighting in American history — Union Captain George Armstrong Custer attended the wedding of Confederate Captain John “Gimlet” Lea at Bassett Hall in Williamsburg, Virginia, as best man. The Union officer was dressed in blue, the Confederate officer in grey, and Custer being Custer spent the next two weeks flirting with the Southern belle cousin of the bride, even joining her in singing “Dixie.”

At one point she told him, “You ought to be in our army.”

“What would you give me if I resigned my commission in the Northern army and joined the Southern?”

“You are not in earnest, are you?”

He wasn’t, of course. Custer was nothing if not loyal, and he believed that he was bound to the Union by the oath he had sworn at West Point, whatever his affection for Southern officers and their ladies.

Such gallantry seems unthinkable today, when members of the Trump administration are hounded from restaurants and theatres, and Confederate officers like John Lea, if they are remembered at all, are considered precursors of the German National Socialists, and their once famous and respected commanders like Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jeb Stuart have their statues toppled and banished from public squares, their names stripped from public schools, and their memories spat upon and disgraced.

The inexorable progression of leftist leaders is to the increasingly brutal.

We’ve seen the shift from the “say anything to get elected” to “calling for mob violence” in a rather short time.

The have-nots with a thirst for revolution are easily led to be cannon-fodder for those whose thirst is for power.

BJK post #333: "Confederates wanted to destroy and absorb as much of the United States as they possibly could, nor would they stop there:"

DiogenesLamp: "Well here I agree with you, except with your choice of the word 'Destroy.' "

So if I offer to amputate your leg because I claim it just want's "independence", that would not immediately "destroy" you?

DiogenesLamp: "I have long argued that with the windfall of all the extra money from Europe, acquiring all of the border states was just a matter of time, and so would have been taking over all the territories."

So that explains & justifies sending Confederate armies to conquer US territories?
And all this was just part of, your word, "independence"?

DiogenesLamp: "Eventually the New York/Washington Axis would have become the leadership of a smaller Rump Country. "

Your words, Rump Country, no longer the United States of America which would be, uh, eviscerated... marginalized... minimized... truncated... redefined... re-bordered... reduced... disappeared... deformed... decimated... and, yes, in due time destroyed:

FLTG-bird: "More of your my lies and BS I you see.
Sorry, but, You I just can’t help yourself myself can you I?"

Whew, that's a lot of work fixing your many mistakes**.
Thank goodness I can still do it.

Lies and BS are all you have. Well, OK. Lies, BS and obsession.

I’ve backed up things I’ve said with quotes from direct sources. You’ve provided....opinions from PC Revisionist historians and invective - nothing more. You’ve sought to cover your deficiency of actual historical facts by simply piling on more BS and repeating yourself endlessly. Anybody who reads can see it doesn’t work.

Though I think the debate is pointless today just as it was in the 1890’s (on and on it went,) and again as it was during the centennial, (on and on the same things said over and again and nobody listening,) I still think that today, a “state’s rights” position could be useful if it ever comes to blows.

Did you get my point that our side will NOT FIGHT without legitimate constituted authority? The states could provide this. There would also need to be a clear moral argument to give our side the Divine authority it has always needed. For the North it was the moral outrage of slavery, for the South it was the Bible authority for slavery, hence both sides in that war were fought by the good people who as Lincoln so aptly said, “called the same God” to aid.

Anyway what is the point in castigating the “lost causers” here on FreeRepublic? Where are the folks that realize we must come together, as we did to face the German threat in 1916 and the Soviet threat in the 1960’s?

Well we don’t need to come together if we are not gonna do anything. So we might as well put those lost causers, in their place.

BTW I cannot see that the invasion-of-the-North argument while perfectly true as far as it goes, is convincing anybody. You might think why this is so. Are you solving some problem? Is the strategy working or not? What is the point? All respect and love to you Brother Joe!

You misunderstood my contention. It is irrelevant what the King thought. It is irrelevant whether the authority is truly legitimate or not. It is enough for our people to believe it to be so in order for them to fight. But I tell you, without that legitimate constituted authority our side WILL NOT FIGHT!!!

Do you think that I am wrong about that? What makes you think so? I want to ask this question whenever I see one of these 2nd civil war threads, until I get an answer. Thanks for your reply!

I think you and I see things unfolding in different ways.

I don't see Civil War 2.0.

I see a decentralized guerrilla war. The decision to fight will not be collective, but individual.

FLT-bird: "Lies and BS are all you have.
Well, OK. Lies, BS and obsession."

Naw, typical Democrat, you're just projecting your own mental state.

FLT-bird: "I’ve backed up things I’ve said with quotes from direct sources. "

Even where that's somewhat true, the quotes you post don't say what you claim they say.

FLT-bird: "You’ve provided....opinions from PC Revisionist historians and invective - nothing more."

"Invective"?
That's you stock in trade, so just more projection.
As for "Revisionist historians", by that you mean fake historians, and that's what Lost Cause mythology is.
But I'll grant you this much: the Lost Cause myth began with people like Jefferson Davis himself, who would certainly know his own mind.
So when Davis said the war was not over slavery, we have to believe in his own mind at that moment it was indeed not over slavery.

However, Davis was not at the SC secession convention and did not write the various "reasons for secession" documents all of which did give slavery a prominent, if not preeminent, role.
Davis was only invited in afterwards.

Further, Davis refused until way too late to do the one thing which helped George Washington win the Revolutionary War and could have turned the tide for the Confederacy: offer the ~4 million slaves freedom in exchange for military service.
When in early 1864 Confederate General Patrick Cleburne suggested that, Davis ignored him and Cleburne was branded "unreliable".

Now it seems that each new generation wants to add its own contributions to the Lost Cause myth, all the while claiming, as you do here, that traditional history is "Revisionist".
Sorry, but we're not the revisers, except where actual mistakes were made -- i.e., how many troops did each side have & lose in a certain battle, etc.

FLT-bird: "You’ve sought to cover your deficiency of actual historical facts by simply piling on more BS and repeating yourself endlessly.
Anybody who reads can see it doesn’t work."

And now still more projection of your own mindset, especially the "repeating yourself endlessly" part.
In fact, I repeat nothing -- zero, zip, nada repeats -- except in response to your own repeated lies.
Remember, to this day pro-Confederates are always the aggressors, first with military power, today with Lost Cause myths.
Union sympathizers are always on defense against whatever new nonsense you throw at us.

So I'll say it again: you can shut us up today, all you have to do is stop posting lies about the Civil War.

BDParrish: "a “state’s rights” position could be useful if it ever comes to blows."

I don't believe it ever will, absent some cataclysm we don't even imagine now.
Remember, there was some dark talk about Obama building, in effect, an alternate military to overthrow existing institutions but nothing came of it.
Doubtless one reason is the Obamanistas thought they could do enough damage simply by infiltrating and corrupting the DC Deep State.
And who knows, maybe they will...?

BDParrish: "Did you get my point that our side will NOT FIGHT without legitimate constituted authority? The states could provide this."

"Our side" will never start any such fight, nor will any come while President Trump is still effective.
As for the more distant future, well... anything is theoretically possible, but a CWII is very improbable under current conditions.

BDParrish: "For the North it was the moral outrage of slavery, for the South it was the Bible authority for slavery, hence both sides in that war were fought by the good people who as Lincoln so aptly said, “called the same God” to aid."

But the Bible strongly opposes slavery for God's people, indeed it is one long anti-slavery document -- from Exodus out of Egypt to Jesus freeing all of us from slavery to sin.
But your comment here shows that like everything else in Lost Cause mythology, claims that the Bible supports slavery are built on lies.

BDParrish: "Anyway what is the point in castigating the 'lost causers' here on FreeRepublic?
Where are the folks that realize we must come together, as we did to face the German threat in 1916 and the Soviet threat in the 1960’s?"

But I don't "castigate" anybody except for endlessly repeating their lies & myths.
By the way, those great "come together" periods were both under "Progressive" Democrat Presidents (Wilson & FDR) who specifically & openly supported both Southern Democrats and much of their Lost Cause mythology.
Today the last of the old Southern Democrats wants to pretend they're Republicans if only we, like old-time Northern Democrats, would buy & embrace their Lost Causer nonsense.

That's not going to happen, nor should it, ever.

You disagree?

extermination like in South Africa.....

All of us should remember this. We may have only one chance to vote if anti-Trumpers take over and the Dems win the House.

In Red China,North Korea and Cuba someone could say, “Hey I don’t like this communist stuff now that we have it. I’m starving to death. Can we have a do over vote? A Mulligan like in golf?”

Answer from guard: “No. You had your vote. Now go sit down-—in your prison cell.”

The left is destroying history and then will rewrite it.

“Obama and Ocasio began the true United States after centuries of KKK toxic white supremacy by white males who were justifiably killed.” is on page one of the History of the United States.

No remaining statues of Confederates OR of Washington,Jefferson, and the rest. Several attractive views of Obama and Mooochelle in bronze, though.

FLT-bird: "Oh look! More of your lies and BS that I refuse to read."

Right! You refuse to read and yet you claim to know they are lies. How?

You refuse to read and yet you claim to know I never cite sources. How?

You refuse to read and yet you claim to know my posts are "invective". How?

You refuse to read and yet you claim to know I repeat myself "endlessly". How?

You post your own endlessly long repetitions of Lost Cause mythology and yet you complain when I answer every one of your lies with truth. How?

Remember again, FRiend, you can shut me up right this very minute, if you really want to.
All you have to do is stop posting lies about the Civil War.

How hard can that be?

FLT-bird: "By my count your posts have been devoid of truth right from the start..."

That was your post #6 empty of content beyond name-calling.

And your count is off, since everything I post can be traced back to source documents.
Of course that doesn't matter to FLT-bird does it?
The only thing mattering to FLT-bird is whether I agree with your opinions, right?
If not, then I'm "devoid of truth", isn't that right?

FLT-bird: "...yet you’be tried literally scores of times to drag me back into these threads with your BS and Lies."

Now your count is totally wrong because I've never, not once, pinged you on a response which did not start from you.
Here's the real story: FLT-bird posted "scores" of very lengthy Lost Cause defenses.
I responded to many of them, point by point by point, citing sources where appropriate.

This drove FLT-bird berserk with anger and so you announced you'd not respond to my responses.
That's fine, no law says anybody has to respond to anything.
Except that you do respond, now six times here, not to defend your Lost Cause mythology, but to call me names.

Typical, typical Democrat.
Do I foresee empty post #7 coming?
