WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD FOR 6/22/2016 DELAYED
freerepublic | 6/23/2018 | greeneyes

Posted on 06/23/2018 11:00:08 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

I bought a Squirrelinator Sunday night, got it Tuesday afternoon. Set it out, baited, Wednesday morning early. By 9:30 Friday morning, I’d caught 8 gray squirrels. They are territorial so it’s been pretty much 1 at a time, although I did have a “double” catch Friday morning. Nothing yesterday or today so it looks like I got the squirrels that were in the yard/garden territory - more will filter in after a while & we’ll be ready for them.

I bought a Squirrelinator without a ‘basin’ - if I had to do it over again, I’d get one with the basin. If you’re doing catch/release, you don’t need a basin; otherwise, it’s a handy thing to have.

Mr. T planted our tomatoes and some old seeds of various vegetables in some available containers this morning. The tomatoes already have flowers and the seeds are about four years old, so this will be fun to watch. Next we have to decide where to put a hardy banana plant and four new hydrangeas. I’m keeping one of the two banana plants inside for now. I also have a bunch of flower seeds to plant, and lots of pruning to do after our dreadful snowstorm last winter.

Fortunately, we’ve come to appreciate our stands of Japanese knotweed and the wild roses that are rapidly overtaking the chainlink fence around the back yard. :)

We usually don’t get strong winds this time of year. The occasional T storm but thats it.
This year has been odd.
Long cool and wet spring and the beginning of summer has been a swing between normal temps and cool rainy days with overnight temps ranging from normal to low 50’s.
Actually had to wear a jacket to go out for a smoke some days/nights.

Good thinking on the dolly.
Do you bring the lemon tree inside for winter?
Missouri isn’t exactly known as citrus country.

Think you’re the second person that has mentioned one squirrel, that turned out to be dozens. I hope it’s just one. No floaters yet.

I don’t think there’s ever just one squirrel ..... :-)

We thinned the population a couple of years ago (different trap/shotgun combo) and after 10, we weren’t bothered for a good while.

I have to admit I am extremely jealous of your garden. You have so much space and you do an exceptional job designing and building your gardens. They are a thing of beauty.

Glad to hear you had as good a success as we had! We did catch one more after I posted, and that seemed to be the last of the locals for us, too. Were you as surprised as we were at how many the trap caught? It’s too late to replant some veggies with the heat coming on but we’re going to try to push new eggplant, cukes, zucchini and pepper starts since they can go into the late summer. And, we know better now what fencing we need to be using and where all the pest damage was really coming from, so that’s going to make gardening a lot less stressful.

I wasn’t that surprised at the number we caught - been watching them scurry up/down the fence, raiding the apple trees, scoping out the veggie garden ..... Our acreage is surrounded by woods so more squirrels will be moving in to replace the trapped ones before too long, I’m sure.

Hope your replanted garden works out for you!

We’ve gotten a welcome bit of rain here in Central Missouri over the past week. We were getting close to 2” and got another pop-up surprise late this afternoon.

Harvested the first half-dozen cukes on Saturday. Tomatoes are beginning to ripen. Garlic is just about ready to come out.

I processed enough cabbage yesterday to fill two 5-gallon buckets with what, in about six weeks, should be some very tasty fermented sauerkraut. There’s still enough out there to make another 5 gallons.

Picked about three gallons of red plums yesterday. The japanese beetles got my damson again this year. Peach trees are loaded with silver-dollar sized baby peaches.

Things are looking up...

Tubebender’s gardens are the finest. The pictures are always beautiful and show the work that goes into it.

greeneyes/tubebender/all who know me, I can’t use my arms. I can’t grow plants or lift anything/can’t comb my hair/can’t get dressed until in the afternoon when I can use arms a little. The last time I posted here, I was going to grow some tomatoes - I can’t grow jack without arms.

MRI on neck and x-rays on shoulders have been done. Orthopedic pain doc has not seen results yet but thinks #5 neck vertebrae has collapsed and mashing on a certain nerve that goes through both shoulders and down arms to hands. He thinks “maybe” he can fix this without surgery - shots into neck - but he hasn’t seen the MRI yet, so not sure that will work.

Living on high mmg pain pills. I finally feel my age 84 - have not felt that age before.

greeneyes, you have also had various pain “things”. Have your shoulders hurt? Anyone had shoulder pain in both arms, wrists hurt with it, too?

I am at the point they can cut off both arms and give me fake ones so I can use my arms. Your shoulders help hold you up. The strain on the shoulders holding you up makes mine hurt. If I lie down, it takes the stress off the shoulders and they don’t hurt. But when I sleep all night, It is monster pain to get out of bed - one uses one’s arms to move in bed and off the bed.

I hope none of you has ever had this and never do.

LOL... I have a high threshold for pain so I’m doing great considering I was born with sever Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and I’m barely five foot tall. I was in such pain that I considered ending my life in 1975 and then I was introduced to a orthopedic surgeon from the University of Texas who fused 8 of my lower vertebrae and installed a Harrington rod to hold them until they fused and the rest is history...
