The economys booming. Some states have raised minimum wages. But even with recent wage growth for the lowest-paid workers, there is still nowhere in the country where someone working a full-time minimum wage job could afford to rent a modest two-bedroom apartment, according to an annual report released Wednesday by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
Not even in Arkansas, the state with the cheapest housing in the country. One would need to earn $13.84 an hour about $29,000 a year to afford a two-bedroom apartment there. The minimum wage in Arkansas is $8.50 an hour.
Even the $15 living wage championed by Democrats would not make a dent in the vast majority of states.
In Hawaii, the state with the most expensive housing, one would have to make $36.13 about $75,000 a year to afford a decent two-bedroom apartment. The minimum wage in Hawaii rose to $10.10 an hour this year.
It gets worse in many metropolitan areas. San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties top the list of most expensive jurisdictions, where one would need to make $60.02 an hour to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment.
The housing crisis is growing, especially for the lowest-income workers, said Diane Yentel, president of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. The rents are far out of reach from what the average renter is earning.

Why should it?
One word - roommates...
Was married, both working, in school, and never had a two bedroom apartment.
Thats why we had roommates when I started out making minimum.
Anyone up to comparing the square footage of housing in the US compared to anywhere else in the world? Asia? Europe? Africa? Latin America?
Hm the article is a lie for a simple reason. In every state, the GOVERNMENT is giving large apartments and even houses to people who are on welfare, never mind working.
Since when is minimum wage supposed to provide enough for a two bedroom apartment?
Minimum wage jobs are meant for students and part timers. Was never meant to be a living wage. By the way I know of no national fast food places that pay minimum wage. Stating pay where I reside is about $9.00 an hour.
Why didn’t they study one bedroom apartments? How about that HUD pays more then half the rent?
Minimum Wage isn’t a wage. It’s a regulation. Feel free to make more money than that.
They confuse Minimum Wage with Basic Income.
What about a studio?
There is no substitute for the free market!
Eliminate the minimum wage, eliminate regulations on construction and housing.
The market will clear.
To the extent government (at all levels) interferes, there will be serious dislocations in the economy.
They never heard of Section 8 housing?
It isn't. The premise of this article is dishonest. Big Media are always lying to you about something.
That’s because minimum wage jobs are meant for high school kids and people who want a second job or to work part time.
A hundred years ago when I was working a minimum wage job I could afford to live in Moms basement and drive an old car.
I moved up in the job world and moved out. Weird, right?
The minimum wage wasn’t designed to support adults, it’s a starter wage, mostly for teens. Go into sales, learn to code online, get into an apprenticeship, join the military, etc.
Immigrant children are being ushered into gas chambers!! Immigrant families are being torn apart!! And now this, minimum wage earners cant afford mansions in this booming economy!!
All is lost!!
(Or is it that the FakeNews media is getting more and more hysterical, Id such a thing was possible.)
If you’re working for minimum wage, you’re either still living at home, or you have roommates.
Husband and I lived in a studio apartment when we first started out in 1980. Between us, we brought in $700/month, $500 of which was rent!
We learned very quickly how to budget and live cheaply. We had our own home within three years.
We now have two Generations behind me that want everything handed to them. They don’t want to work for anything or improve their lot in life through education and hands-on experience. Thanks, Democrats!
The figures for housing are way off. My guess is they only looked at rent in metropolitan areas.
