Racist harassment of 'Last Jedi' star Kelly Marie Tran and the 'Solo' backlash: Lucasfilms problem isnt the movies, its trolls who want only the nostalgia of their youth, like "old Luke Skywalker hiding on an island from everything new," writes columnist Marc Bernardin.
Fandom has always been an us versus them proposition. In the early days, it was because you loved something that the world at large found silly, be it comic books or Doctor Who. It was you and those who felt like you, against everyone else. Star Wars redefined fandom because it built a bigger tent than had ever existed before. Suddenly, the "everyone else" also loved Star Wars. Your mom knew what The Force was. Mark Hamill was on The Tonight Show. There was Yoda underwear. It was the first real fan thing that exploded into a phenomenon. But fandom always needs a them.
Star Wars is in an interesting place right now. The most recent film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, has been drastically underperforming at the box office. After two weeks in release, it had pulled in a mere $271 million worldwide. Analysts believe Disney will lose $50 million or more on the film, and Solo comes on the heels of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which despite making $1.3 billion worldwide proved itself an incredibly divisive film. While critics loved it (judging by the 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes), fans were split.
Some loved the bold liberties of writer-director Rian Johnson. They understood that there was room under that big tent for characters like Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), women placed alongside Carrie Fishers Leia and Ridleys Rey at the center of the Star Wars drama.

PC is killing SW.
Here is how to destroy a franchise: Make the heroine an inexplicable Mary Sue (Han, Luke and Leia all had back stories to explain their abilities), ensure that from now on ALL “heroes” will be NOT be Straight White Males, tell your fan base to f themselves, change the narrative to ensure the victory of the heroes lasted only a few years and might as well have never happened, then tell your fan base to lay their johnsons on the sidewalk so you can run over them with a steam roller.
You know — the hiLIARy 2016 campaign strategy.
“The dogs won’t eat the dog food”.
Theres a video on YT featuring an actorwho played young Harrison Ford in a movie called something about Adelinereciting the cantina speech from Star Wars at the same time as Harrison Ford. The guy is spot on. It wouldnt have helped the speech, but it would have made the medicine go down easier.
This version doesnt have the original Ford clip.
The Last Jedi’s answer to the questions raised in The Force Awakens is...
...answers don’t matter.
There are no answers.
Everybody can fight with a lightsaber.
Everybody can use the force.
Everything communicated about the jedi in the original trilogy was meaningless.
The only meaningful thing is a stupid symbol.
Should be it wouldnt have overcome the script.
The problem with Star Wars is always the same thing, special effects does not make a plot line! Robert Wise learned that from the 1st Star Trek film. Star Wars is just getting old with the whole force vs. dark side crap. Need to introduce a new mystical power, the Trump-side! It’s not exactly good, but not entirely bad, but no matter what, you always win in the end the liberals always looks and go insane as a result.
Solo is the best of the new crop of films. Yeah, theres an SJW bot. But its far funnier than annoying. The build up to the end of the film is worth it. Woody Harrelsons as Becket is also surprisingly good.
I only have one reservation about it, but will stay mum so as not to spoil it.
I find myself not interested in new entertainment because the actors have made themselves repulsive that I no longer see them acting just jerks. I’ve been watching old movies instead.
Regards,
When are these idiots going to learn to ignore social media? Facebook/Twitter opinions mean nothing. The list of failed products based on social media is endless. It’s mostly bots anyhow. Bots don’t buy products or engage in boycotts.
Rather stupid to hate the people who spent billions on movie tickets and merchandise to say it is all your fault, after they made it a billions of dollars enterprise.
It’s not just the feminist nonsense. In the first movie, when Kenobi wanted to duel Vadar he had to get in a spaceship and travel across the universe to do so - in this movie Luke just astral projects himself to the scene of action. It’s crap like that which also makes people reject the current abomination.
My son loved the Clone Wars cartoons. I realized how toxic “Solo” was when I asked him if he want to see it, and he said no.
That is after having seen “The Force Awakens”, loving it, seeing “The Last Jedi” and being lukewarm about it, and being shown the original trilogy and loving that.
So a kid who liked or was OK with the movies didn’t want to see “Solo” though that’s the movie that would be most aimed at him.
I wonder to what degree killing “Solo” and then having a movie about him was the mistake, whether having it in the reverse order would have been a solution.
Radical egalitarianism. Everyone is equally powerful if they just listen to their feelings.
That’s social justice.
Bad entertainers blame the audience
George Lucas doesn't know what made Star Wars such a success. He thought teddy bears and a stupid cartoon Rabbit were good ideas.
His original movie was luck, and this is demonstrable by the fact he hasn't made anything good since.
Modern Hollywood and all of its hanger-ons never learned the one key truth of making successful movies - You make movies for the fans not yourself or friends or studios.
When you take away all the hype the fans are the ones with the money you need. If they don’t like your product you go hungry not them.

“There is no one to identify with. Even under the alien masks, no one looks like me.”
Toxic Femdom! is killing star wars.
