NASAs Mars Curiosity rover has been on the Red Planet for a long, long time. Back in March it tallied its 2,000th Martian day, which is 2,054 Earth days, and despite some drilling woes that have since been solved, the plucky little rover is still cruising along and conducting experiments in the name of science.
Now, just days after NASA revealed that its new drilling technique works as planned, the agency is calling for a press conference to reveal something special. As always, the group is tight-lipped about what it has in store, but it will be holding its event this coming Thursday, June 7th, to talk all about it.
So, put simply, we dont know exactly what is going on, but its somehow related to Mars and more specifically the aging Curiosity rover

I bet that you are on the right track.
Although I think they have found carbon on Mars already, and methane, so perhaps some other type of hydrocarbon.
Although a huge gold discovery would be neat! “GOLD! Thar’s gold in them thar hills!!”
An aside - there are still lots of rich gold deposits in the world. But it takes more money than it is worth to get it out and shipped. I’m guessing the cost of mining on Mars would be....astronomical.

Water, frozen water under the dust layers. They've known—or claimed—that there is water (in the form of ice) for several years, IIRC, based (minimally) on at least one crater photo which appeared to clearly show it.
I presume that one or more groups of scientists conducted some sort of spectral analysis (and perhaps other analyses) in order to draw that conclusion. It hasn't been refuted, to my knowledge...
