Solo: A Star Wars Story has mustered only $264 million at the worldwide box office, but one prominent voice on Wall Street blames the misfire on poor marketing, not a larger issue with the franchise.
Doug Creutz, a veteran media analyst at Cowen, issued a report to investors that reaffirmed his market perform rating on Disney shares. While the report is based on his financial view of the company, it allows the analyst a chance to wade directly into the pop-culture waters to offer his take on why Solo stumbled. Point by point, the report knocks down some of the suggested cultprits, from production woes to tight release calendar spacing just five months after The Last Jedi, to lingering fan animus toward TLJ, If the franchise was able to survive Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, we have a hard time believing Last Jedi could have done that much damage, Creutz writes.

That’s not true... todays audience still wants good vs evil... and good winning in the end....
The problem is Hollywood doesn’t want to make that sort of movie... don’t kid yourself by claiming what is made is what audiences want... Look at the movies that fit the good v evil mold, no greys, no bs... and those tend to be the ones that dominate the box office when they are made and made well.
Why do you think it is the only Genre of film to consistently make money of Super Hero films?
Because they are largely the ONLY genre, which, for the most part consistently plays that storyline.
Wow. Wow. He’s gorgeous.
Rogue One also had numerous reshoots that altered the story before the theatrical release. Quite a few impossible plot threads appear in the trailer.
She got blasted to smithereens, so I didn’t mind her that much. Thought she was obnoxious but funny. Turns out, though...she DID become the Falcon’s brains!

Theyve had all these years to try to make another movie close to as good as Empire, and it aint happening
>
Worse part: They had a PLETHORA of ‘canon following’ books, graphic novels, fan stories, etc. to cobble together to 1) make a GREAT *series* of films 2) that would attract new and old.
Instead, they went w/ the Kennedy\Left (I repeat myself) axiom: We’re doing it MY way.
Torque off the base and HOPE you pull in a new generation to fill the space/coffers *BRILLIANT* (SMH)

I quit going to Star Wars movies several years before I quit going to theaters altogether.

Yeah, even the new “all you can see for $20/mo” isn’t getting in the door. There needs to be more than the occasional flick, that I can’t wait for Redbox (or pull from online), to get me interested.
That ain’t been for SOME time (TFA...boy was I kicking myself. They should have just called it ‘A New Hope: Redux’).
There IS a nihilistic audience out there that want- anti-heroes. Disney is aiming for SOME market and profiting from it. I think the majority still wants uplifting, genuine hero films that are not caped super-heroes, but we are getting mighty tired and disgusted. Looking for tiny crumbs in otherwise depressing films is demeaning. Nostalgia only excuses so much; but audiences( younger, target audiences) are far different now than they were when SW became a world wide phenomenon. You’d think that-if another 40 yr phenomenon is what they want- they’d follow the formula instead of throwing it away and denigrating it-and those who want it-wouldn’t you?
The L3 character was clearly a political thing, it wasn’t really needed and didn’t really work... Though it was used for comedy more than anything...
My probably biggest issue with that character was simply, why the hell would a droid have hips that sway? The producers clearly wanted an a “female” droid, which in and of itself makes no sense... but putting a female voice into a droid wasn’t enough we had to make it move like a woman which was dumb. I presume this was done for the implied pansexual stuff that got into the press.
Lets face it though, L3 is hardly the most annoying character in a star wars film... Jar Jar anyone? And unlike JarJar, she is short lived... and honestly other than the way too personal reaction by Lando to L3’s death, I would have written all of the characters actions as simply the droid was self delusional... Pansexuality would not have entered my consciousness had it not been in the press, and the far to personal reaction Lando had to the characters death.
SO it clearly was a political message.. but without Lando’s reaction, would have simply chalked it up to this droid is self delusional.
Well, there goes the assumption that everyone likes Solo-and Ford-right? ;-P
Of course there is SOME audience for that, but its not the MAIN AUDIENCE out there... Most clearly want good old fashioned good v evil...
There is an audience out there for anything, that doesn’t make it the majority.
Like I said, for all the execution issues, and political pontificating and bad writing and bad execution that was the Last Jedi.. its main sin, and the sin that Solo paid the price for, was that it took the SW universe Good V Evil and turned it into shades of grey nonsense, that most have no desire to watch.
Kennedy and those she allowed to run TLJ screwed the pooch.... SJW’s at Lucas sullied on of the most bankable brands in cinema.... I am hard pressed to believe that Disney won’t purge Lucasfilms... given the lesson they learned from Marvel Comics when it comes to SJW....
Time will tell, but I don’t see the audiences returning while she’s still at the helm.
Well, they lost this 40 year fan. My SW collecting has ended too-even for OT stuff- I’m not giving Disney a penny. I have what I love, SW is personal to me and no corporation can ruin it. I got off the train at ROTJ, my GFFA isn’t the destination anymore.
LOL. “Poor marketing”. This is like the DNC saying they did not get their message out. They did. That was their proplem.
Solo was just a crap movie.
They killed off the lead or popular characters in Star Wars (1 offed herself), kept using the blow up the Death star / planet plot, reuse scenes and dialog from the past movies. Introduce bland characters to replace the originals that do not have any spark in them. Add plots that do not make sense and you have the franchise failing.
At least Star Trek is still the same.... oh wait.
You’re the first I’ve ever heard! :-D
“If the franchise was able to survive Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, we have a hard time believing Last Jedi could have done that much damage...”
His comment reveals a fundamental misunderstanding about the difference between what was wrong with the prequels and what is wrong with the SJW Star Wars movies.
“That’s the same reason I switched from Superman comics to Batman comics when I was a kid.”
Yeah, I always tell people Batman is a better character than Superman, exactly BECAUSE Superman is too perfect. There’s never any dramatic tension in a Superman story, because you know he will defeat anyone because he is virtually unstoppable.
Sure, someone will probably show up with a pocketful of kryptonite, but even that is predictable and Supe never fails to overcome it.
You’re right, this is the same reason Luke is better than Rey. Luke really was a dumb rube kid that was out of his element. Han Solo and Leia were both more qualified to be saving the galaxy than him, and they both gave him a bit of attitude to show they knew it. By Empire, he nearly screwed everything up, and if Vader hadn’t turned out to be his father and went easy on him, he would have been dead instead of just losing a hand. He had screwed up enough that when he managed to come back in ROTJ as a badass it was a meaningful change in his character.
Rey is a badass from the first scene she is in, so there is no way to give her any character development now.
Walt Disney wanted what he made to be ART.
The current slugs running his corporation are stuck selling Unimaginative Pablum
The third movie was enuf for me. How long ago was that ...
The originals drew on old serials, akira kurosawa films, and ancient legends.
Would the crew behind they new trilogy please show their work and influences?
