Solo: A Star Wars Story has mustered only $264 million at the worldwide box office, but one prominent voice on Wall Street blames the misfire on poor marketing, not a larger issue with the franchise.
Doug Creutz, a veteran media analyst at Cowen, issued a report to investors that reaffirmed his market perform rating on Disney shares. While the report is based on his financial view of the company, it allows the analyst a chance to wade directly into the pop-culture waters to offer his take on why Solo stumbled. Point by point, the report knocks down some of the suggested cultprits, from production woes to tight release calendar spacing just five months after The Last Jedi, to lingering fan animus toward TLJ, If the franchise was able to survive Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, we have a hard time believing Last Jedi could have done that much damage, Creutz writes.

Exactly, that is the biggest problem with new films, Star Wars was simple, good vs evil... not shades of grey.. and if you strip away all the PC nonsense, bad acting, bad writing, and everything else.. the last mainline film took SW into shades of grey... and that is not what Star Wars is, or ever was about.
Kennedy needs gone...
If it isn’t thought of as a “Great” movie, folks are just going to wait for it to come out on DVD, rather than plunking down $40+ in a theater.
“We failed because we just didnt get our message out”
right: we didn’t “explain” things good enough for the stupid, ignorant voters to “understand” ...
Nah, that’s not true.... None of the Prequels were ever considered great and they all made Lucas Billions...
LUCASFILM insulted their audience.... they are paying the price for that even if no one wants to admit it.
Far far worse films than Solo have made far more money... This is clearly a fan revolt, nothing more, nothing less.
I agree.
I’ve actually enjoyed Rogue One and Solo more than the mainline series.
Solo wasn’t as SJW-ey as detractors seem to think...There was a feminist/equal-rights droid who was mostly played for laughs, but otherwise it was fine.
There are two prominent females, only one of which is a protagonist, and you don’t discover that until the third act.
The five main characters are all male, and three of them are white. Lando has been black since the 80’s and the other minority was a Wookie.
In discussing this movie with an acquaintance (liberal), it was suggested to me that the perception of Good and Evil depends on what side you are on (*That’s Deep, with an eye roll that strained a muscle). He then went on to start to explain that bees are perceived as evil.... I stopped him. Analogy fail! Bees can’t be evil. They aren’t self aware and don’t contemplate their existence.
Are terrorists evil? (Why, yes they are.) Are they Evil because they indiscriminately murder women and children because of their righteous religious convictions? Or are they evil because they are confused about what is right and wrong? Does it really matter when the lives of innocents are at stake? Kill the bee and weep about the injustice and misunderstanding later.
In the latest Star Wars movie, they want us to consider what is good and evil, not observe the righteous battle that has good triumph over it. In this way, the movie reminded be of liberal politics, so I couldn’t enjoy it.
I have to confess that, on a lark, I bought Rogue One on BlueRay and loved it. Probably the thing I liked most was how and where (in time and space) it ended.
I thought it was an awesome story.
It’s not a feminist movie.
Went to see it recently, and found that, after my 30-minute mid-movie nap, I didn’t really miss anything.
You think Han was ugly? Never, ever, ever, ever heard that one before!!!!
Rogue One was good, some nit picky things about it.. but a solid movie. It played and was received well and gave more hope that Disney wasn’t going to destroy SW.....
Then the Last Jedi came out... and well.... the fan base said no more..
Solo is an okay movie, but it is paying the price for Last Jedi basically completely destroying the SW universe in so many ways.
Solo was just the next movie to come out... wouldn’t matter which movie was next, Last Jedi insulted the fan base, and they have decided no more....
Kennedy and the SJW folks she has around her need gone... You can’t run around publicly insulting your audience and telling them they just don’t get it because they are too stupid. Disney learned that lesson the hard way with Marvel Comics and its SJW crap... took them far too long to snuff it out honestly, but the pocketbook hit finally was too much for them to take.
I believe Disney learned its lesson with that... and while SOLO is nowhere near the drivel that The Last Jedi was, and all in all was an okay film... THe fact is the Last Jedi poisoned the water, and I don’t see the fans returning as long as the person responsible for it, is still directing the ship.
That would be the last two or three. The point is, people don't want to support the franchise anymore because they are sick of the "Super Girl Ghostbusters in Space." and excessive "Vibrancy."
It is a protest vote for what "Star Wars" has become. Also did you miss the condescending feminist Robot?
I posted about this after it came out... there was a lot wrong with the Last Jedi..... But when you peeled away all the execution problems... and their were many.. the biggest problem was it took Star Wars, which was ALWAYS (at least in film world) a very clean good vs evil story, and decided to take it all dark and shades of gray....
That’s not Star Wars... that is also probably its most unforgivable offense.
There are all sorts of shades of grey stories out there... Star Wars is not, (at least in film) and never has been one of them and those that want to see good vs evil don’t give a rats hairy behind for shades of grey rationalizations and excuses.
Homely as hell. Crooked nose, squinty eyes, smirking ugly. Even the attitude put me off. Don’t like that type of man or character.Didn’t think they could find anyone as homely to be his son- I was wrong. Driver is painfully hideous,IMO. Leia didn’t deserve a kid that ugly.
“The Phantom Menace is Citizen Kane compared to The Last Jedi”
Because in TPM, they let masculine heroes play the roles of masculine heroes.
I watched the original movie 27 times in the theater. I was fanatical. I got over it and, well, got older. So I don’t follow the series all that much.
However, the guy that sits next to me is a current Star Wars fanatic. He actually thinks The Last Jedi was an awesome movie. Dead serious. He’s also a modern liberal, emasculated American male in his early 30’s though.
Thank you! Besides the militant female stupidity( hello female Karate Kid!) SW was presented as-and the public loved it as- a Good-vs-Evil, Good wins, moral myth. Now today’s audiences don’t want that. It’s the ‘everything is forgivable’ ‘no one is really all good or bad’ mentality that Disney is playing to. That isn’t-can’t be-and will never be SW, despite the marketing labels. Original SW fans don’t want that-and Disney doesn’t want us. So be it.
Most of the so-called comic book movies wouldn’t even be a good comic book.
Global warming has cooled box office receipts!
