Solo: A Star Wars Story has mustered only $264 million at the worldwide box office, but one prominent voice on Wall Street blames the misfire on poor marketing, not a larger issue with the franchise.
Doug Creutz, a veteran media analyst at Cowen, issued a report to investors that reaffirmed his market perform rating on Disney shares. While the report is based on his financial view of the company, it allows the analyst a chance to wade directly into the pop-culture waters to offer his take on why Solo stumbled. Point by point, the report knocks down some of the suggested cultprits, from production woes to tight release calendar spacing just five months after The Last Jedi, to lingering fan animus toward TLJ, If the franchise was able to survive Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, we have a hard time believing Last Jedi could have done that much damage, Creutz writes.

People like me are punishing them for SJW content, such as “woman splaining” in the last movie, Lando being “pan sexual”, etc. I’ll wait until the small screen and see it for free. And if they destroy the Avengers, I’ll do the same with that franchise too. They’re getting close with ScarJo’s haircut.
Solo is a box-office disaster because longtime fans expect a political hack job of a movie.
This is funny. His rationale for why it's not "franchise fatigue" is that they survived multiple bad movies in a row already. Uh, that's why there is fatigue. People are tired of bad Star Wars movies.
I liked it and will buy the Bluray like I did Rouge One. The sequels are trash and never watch them again
Why don’t we see lead roles portrayed by that race that was relegated to playing in the cantina band?
The Phantom Menace is Citizen Kane compared to The Last Jedi
Too big to fail!
I agree, there definitely is some politicking in this movie, but its relatively minor, and it wasn’t needed... but its nowhere near as bad as the last main line movie where an entire subplot existed just for political nonsense and it didn’t work and was a kludge etc...
Basically the L3 character in this film was a PC pander character, but the screen time is brief and not nearly as bad as the last movies stuff, but it still would have been a better movie without it.
That said, the biggest critique I can offer for the movie was it just doesn’t gel/click. The timing and delivery of the comic relief doesn’t work... Lines that are clearly meant to be the comedy did not elicit laughter from the audience.. the timing and delivery were just off... and honestly... perhaps because of this, Solo just isn’t Solo... He’s the lovable scamp, and it just doesn’t come off like it should.. I think they attempted to write it that way, but the execution is missing something crucial.
It wasn’t a BAD movie, it really isn’t performing poorly due to anything itself. The critiques I have for it, believe me have sat through far far worse.
I do believe Kennedy needs removed from the head of Lucasfilms and that Disney needs to purge the SJW from Star Wars just like they did from Marvel Comics... they nearly ruined the print brand entirely... and they are risking the same with SW. The same sort of PURGE needs to happen at Lucasfilms....
Disney did it at Marvel and I expect them to do it at Lucasfilms soon, if they haven’t already put it into motion.
If they don’t they risk the same outcome with SW as they got with Marvel Comics when they let the SJW crowd run the show.
I just didn't care that much about a character that they obviously made flawless and invulnerable. That's the same reason I switched from Superman comics to Batman comics when I was a kid.
Please enlighten me as to the origin of that .gif ...
I’m shocked they didn’t blame it on Trump voters.
Good rundown. Thanks.
I’ve always found “message movies”, even ones I agree with, to be of poor quality because they are trying to shoehorn the message in even when it may not work. Sounds like that is what happened with the last mainline movie, and poisoned the well for this one.
And as you pointed out, it may also be just poorly written and/or executed in this case. The 20 something Anakin Skywalker character was so terrible he was an embarrassment.
Thing is, when they build these characters, they really need to think about who the person is they are building, and who the audience is that they are presenting the character to.
Maybe they just need better writers.
I pretty much lump the Star Wars stuff with the comic book/super hero movies. I got bored with them some time back. That doesn’t mean I don’t like good science fiction though. I just discovered a SciFy series on Netflix called “Travelers” and its really good. It’s got 4 or 5 seasons in the can so you can really sink your teeth into it. I’m about halfway through season 1.
They are just heaped with wonderful parody and sarcasm.
Agreed. I haven't seen it. I took my son to see the last one. I was frustrated during the movie because they so radically obfuscated Good and Evil. None of the characters were sure if they were good or bad. They all seemed confused about what they were fighting for. Then there was the overt Feminist influence.
I'm over it.
Agreed regarding the feminine SJW stuff.
Unfortunately, Star Wars has been pushing moral relativity since Return of the Jedi (let’s not forget when Obi-Wan basically claimed that truth depends on a point of view).
Pan sexual Lando and feminazi robot had absolutely nothing to do with it... Telling male fans they weren’t needed also had nothing to do with it.
Cramming off putting sjw tropes had nothing to do with it.
Calling fans “cry babies” because they didn’t like sjw BS in the movies had nothing to do with it.
/ Sarc
They will never figure it out.
Actually, Lando was never a SJW character. Billy Dee Williams specifically said that he never really thought about his race when doing the character, just that he was like a swashbuckling pirate.
He only became SJW when Kasdan made that unnecessary remark about how he was pansexual (which was never alluded to even once).
ROFL!!!
I watched the whole thing.
TWICE.
Those guys are awesome.
Well the Solo actor is far better than the Anakin actor... It honestly is not a bad movie, its not a great movie.. but its not failing because its a bad movie. I can’t say it doesn’t have any politicks in in, but it clearly just doesn’t quite get where it needs to be.
Like I said, I could intellectually read the humor that was being attempted, but the audience, none of them in my showing laughed at many of the Soloesque lines that brought comic relief and the personality that is Han in the original movies.
I don’t know if the actor just couldn’t sell it, or if the timing was just wrong... I think it was perhaps a bit of both, but the director should have caught this.. .and Ron Howard is not a slouch of a director so I was kind of surprised that those comical lines, didn’t get the effect/pause etc they should have..
I don’t think it was written terribly as it just got lost in execution.
Either way, like I said, it wasn’t horrible, and it wasn’t nearly as bad as the last mainline.... It did have an unnecessary PC/SJW character, but it was a minor play, and honestly if it wasn’t for the press around the whole pansexual thing, I would have chalked that whole subplot up to a droid with self delusions.... other than the scene where it is (spoiler alert) killed/dies... and Lando’s reaction seems a bit too much for it... don’t really see that push, though clearly since it made the press that was its intent...
I really think Solo is just paying the price for the last main line movie being so bad, and the SJW and Kennedy reactions to the critiques of it basically telling the fans they are just too stupid and back woods to “get it” as to why Solo failed.
I honestly thing Disney will clean house at Lucasfilm... I think the situation at Marvel Comics taught them a valuable lesson... If they don’t purge Kennedy and the SJW continent at Lucasfilm soon, I would be surprised.
