Late Monday night, the White House showed off the finishing touches of first lady Melania Trump's first state dinner, as she and President Trump will host French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife at the executive mansion tomorrow.
Reporters were briefly allowed into the White House and were greeted by gold table settings, gold silverware, gold candlesticks, gold wine glasses, gold chairs situated elegantly around puffs of green and white flowers in the candlelit state dining room.
At each of the 130 place settings there was a menu, with the White House seal and the fleur-de-lis, which were also in gold.
Just outside the state dining room, the first lady went with a different theme, using some 1,200 cherry blossoms in giant black vases that would greet guests as they came in.

“”I would find those place settings just a little cozy. Im surprised they didnt fit fewer people at each table. It would have been nice to spread it out a bit rather than have the utensils squeezed in on each side of the plate. Maybe the room doesnt hold as many tables as theyd need. Still lovely - love the flowers.””
I have to agree.. I tried to count the number of settings and with the centerpiece in the way, it was difficult to judge but possibly 10? I understand about the china and utensils but where do GOLD chairs come from? I think it’s a bit much but I guess it goes with the territory. Aren’t the plates taken away for the actual serving of the meal on other plates? All that for show? You can tell my table is set with Corningware...and that includes holidays after going the china route for so many years. Just too much hassle anymore.
Mrs. Trump make the mooch look like an old bag lady.
While I agree that gold is gaudy if over-the-top, think about the classical nature of the event. America and France have been allies since our founding. Our country wouldn’t exist if not for the help of the French, and I think a dinner replete with all of the ornate touches of gold trim is fitting for such a longstanding friendship, no matter how strained the politics of the heads of state.
You bet! We are the UNITED STATES of AMERICA dammit! MAGA!!!
OOps you’re right. lol I just got up and not enough coffee yet.
The next up size are 10’s and they’ll seat 10 comfortably. I’ve always preferred 8’s because they seem more intimate but maybe the room size required 10’s, not enough room for all the tables.
The tables are dressed well anyway.
It’s beautiful but does look very crowded; the utensils are practically overlapping the next place setting. Apparently this is the most cozy room and it doesn’t look like there is room for more tables.
I understand about the china and utensils but where do GOLD chairs come from

I agree - its beautiful and appropriate. And its just the kind of thing that will dazzle the French (always a good thing to do!).
It is good to dislike what you cannot have.
Bump !
Trump made the comment some years ago that the White House needs a world class ballroom. He offered to build it. Look for that great embellishment in his second term.
Trump will get two hepings of Baked Alaska and then the media Blitzkrieg will ensue.
Bwahahahaha... That there was fuuuny!
It is a bit much with the gold, imho, but I am happy to see the childish tie-dye art is gone.
Hey! If you’ve got it; flaunt it. (I don’t usally think or operate that way. But since no democRATS are invited; let it ALL hang out!).
I wasn’t sure about the gold chairs either but then I thought what other color would they be? If you did white, the room would be too white and if you did any other color it would ruin the color scheme.
We all know it’s been reported President Trump loves the color gold.
Overall it’s a beautiful room, classy.
Did you see her today I almost fell over. Gorgeous!
