Scotts telomeres (endcaps of chromosomes that shorten as one ages) actually became significantly longer in space, NASA researchers wrote in a statement. The space agency added that Kelly had hundreds of space genes activated by the year-long flight which reportedly altered the astronauts immune system, DNA repair, bone formation networks, hypoxia, and hypercapnia.
While Scott Kellys height and 93 percent of his DNA returned to normal after returning to Earth, NASA confirmed that seven percent of his genes have remained changed and may stay that way. This is thought to be from the stresses of space travel, which can cause changes in a cells biological pathways and ejection of DNA and RNA, researchers added.

Oh my goodness, don't tell me there is actual science going on here. Be still my beating heart. What an amazing find. Space Genes-- I want some of those. How do I switch these suckers on...

Different DNA, or different DNA expression?
Still, interesting!

Just DNA that is normally off, switching on, which is so cool. Back-up space genes

Although you lose bone density (and continue to when you return).

On the plus side, he aged a few milliseconds less due to relativistic effects.

Yes. The article is biologically illiterate so it’s hard to know exactly what is meant.

NASA confirmed that seven percent of his genes have remained changed and may stay that way. If a chimp is only 2% genetically different from a human, what in the world has he become at 7% different?
