Kids who get more vaccines don't get sick more often than kids who get fewer
Some parents may be afraid that babies and toddlers get too many vaccines all at once, but a new study can help put such worries to rest.
It found that kids who got more vaccines were not any more likely to get unrelated infections than kids who got fewer vaccines, or who had them spaced out more than recommended.
There was not much reason to think that vaccinating children might make them somehow more susceptible to diseases in general, but the researchers said it is important to keep testing, to reassure parents.
The new study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looks carefully not just at the number of vaccines, but at the number of antigens the molecules that actually stimulate immune response.
Some parents are concerned that multiple vaccines in early childhood could weaken their childs immune system, Jason Glanz of the Institute for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Colorado and colleagues wrote.
Its true that kids are vaccinated against more diseases than in the past.
Vaccine rates are up but so are refusals In the past three decades, the routine childhood immunization schedule in the first two years of life expanded from three vaccines against seven diseases to 10 vaccines against 14 diseases, the team wrote.
Babies are vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps and rubella, chickenpox, polio, hepatitis and bugs that cause meningitis, pneumonia and diarrhea.
Some parents believe this increase in vaccine exposure is harmful to children, with specific concerns that early childhood immunization 'overloads' the immune system and increases the risk for future infection, Glanz and colleagues added.
Based in part on this concern, an estimated 10 percent to 15 percent of parents are choosing delayed or alternative immunization schedules for their children.
Several studies have shown this is not the case, and a 2013 report by the Institute of Medicine, now the National Academy of Medicine, found no evidence that the childhood immunization schedule is not safe.
"The small but vocal minority of antivaccine groups may not be satisfied by the evidence."
"The small but vocal minority of antivaccine groups may not be satisfied by the evidence." Furthermore, vaccines have been fine-tuned. "Although the number of vaccinations recommended is greater than ever before, the vaccines used in the current immunization schedule actually have fewer antigens (inactivated or dead viruses and bacteria, altered bacterial toxins, or altered bacterial toxins that cause disease and infection) because of developments in vaccine technology. From 1980 to 2000, the immunization schedules total number of antigens decreased by approximately 96 percent," that 2013 report reads.
A 2005 Danish study found no evidence of vaccine overload, but the hypothesis had not been tested in U.S. kids given the current U.S. vaccine schedule.
Glanzs team did that, studying 944 kids aged 2 to 4 who caught infections covered by vaccines as well as those not targeted by vaccines, including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. For instance, many causes of colds and flu-like symptoms are not covered by vaccines, nor is norovirus, the most common cause of stomach flu.
Glanzs team did not simply measure the number of vaccines the children got, but the total number of antigens in those vaccines.
Kids brought to the doctor for a variety of infections were compared to similar healthy children.
The children who got sick got almost precisely the same number of vaccine antigens as those who did not get sick, the study found.
The study proves robust and reassuring results, Dr. Sean OLeary of the University of Colorado and Dr. Yvonne Maldonado of the Stanford University School of Medicine wrote in an editorial.
But it may not stop the vaccine deniers who have become much more active as social media gives them an easy way to voice their opinions without contradiction from experts.
The present study provides further reassurance to parents that the U.S. childhood vaccination schedule is safe in terms of not being associated with an increased risk of nonvaccine-targeted infections, yet the small but vocal minority of antivaccine groups may not be satisfied by the evidence, wrote OLeary and Maldonado, who were not involved in the study.
For example, insistence by such groups that vaccines cause autism persists, despite overwhelming science to the contrary.
But they agreed that such studies are useful.
Simply providing scientific information and assuming parents will make the decision to vaccinate is not enough. Delivering evidence-based information to parents and clinicians in ways that inspire confidence in the robust and safe childhood immunization schedule is critical for maintaining the health of children, they wrote.
Some parents argue that it is harmless to space out vaccines, but pediatricians say that it can in fact be dangerous or at least troubling to do so.
For instance, older kids are more likely to get fevers after receiving the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. And people who catch measles naturally suffer from suppressed immune systems afterwards.
In addition, the immune systems of teenagers often respond less effectively to vaccines.
Hmm. Many parents I know would say the jury is still out.
Robert deNiro is convinced that vaccines caused one of his children to become autistic. He is but one of many people who wrestle with this choice. Other than on this issue, I don’t pay deNiro any attention.
One study can be contradicted by a later study.
I'm trying to think what I was vaccinated against, in the 1950s....Polio, and maybe later, when I was older DPT...HHmmmm ....I had German Measles and chickenpox...and survived.
Tetanus?
DPT...T = tetanus, right?
Vaccines are evil
The stupid medical industry is ruining children for profit
SIDS and autism did not exist before widespeqrd vaccination of babies and toddlers
There is a 3 billion dollar fund to pay off the ruinined families
The vaccine industry. Evil at its core. Do gooders from HELL
it’s at 47 vaccines now they want you to take your whole life
109 billion $ and Counting
It’s truly the stupidest and most evil thing allopathic medicine pushes
Anyone whose really interested in FACTS. I have eye opening videos by compassionate doctors who have studied this for decades who will show the negligence blindness and outright malfeasance by the AMA and others
Otherwise flame away all you ingnirsnt followers if the death peddlers
“Herd immunity “ and all that bull rap
My solution for all pathogens. ALL OF TGEM ?
The silver ion
And guess what ? It’s in 22000 medical products but the damn lying doctors try to say it doesn’t work internally and will turn you blue
Measles mumps rubella scarlet fever pneumonia. The flu
Silver kills them alll. Dead. For free
Ok nuff sed
Ive seen it. A two year old
We looked at what do other first world countries do. One thing they do is spread out the immunizations. All in one day is hubris. Its prick. Why do they say its ok to get eight shots in one day. The day theyre separated from their mother
Just spread it out just frikin duh
Ignore what I’m saying at your PERIL
In a few months, I will be 62. I still have never had chickenpox, not that I want it. I’m told I may have built up a resistance to it by now, repeated exposure in minute amounts of the virus. Heck if I know for sure.
The US has a ridiculous number of required vaccines, given in a compressed timeframe. I seem to remember it is +60.
I would space them out...
Italy has 10.
And if I feed an infant honey they might not get botulism.
I would be excoriated if I did and the baby did though.
If their immune system is that delicate then giving them that many vaccines in that short a time can't be good either.
My opinion. Your mileage may vary.
Please watch the documentary before pooh poohing this. I'll wager right now the Florida shooter was Autistic. We are going to have a nation of autistic children that can't relate to people very soon unless the truth comes out. My daughters disease has already caused her a lifetime of grief. Parents of Autistic children are living in their own hell right now. If you don't get a vaccination for your child, they can actually take your child from you. Do illegals have a shot record to go to your school? Please take the time to at least look at this movie before making up your mind.
Some of our grandchildren have had all their vax’s, some hardly any, and the youngest is having them spread out. The thing is, some of the pediatric practices will drop you if you don’t vaccinate. I say “who cares - just take them somewhere else. They don’t have to see a pediatrician.
That is the thing with science.
Look at all the diet info that has flip flopped multiple times in the last few decades. Public policy has been based off of cience that keeps flip flopping and it has negative impacts on peoples lives.
Just because you are trying to do things in the best interests of people doesnt mean it is in their best interests. Still can really mess up folks actual lives.
Gardisil. Just one example. The kids in India who got polio from the polio vaccine.
And then gvvt sets up secret unconstittional vacine courts to hide the damage and keep details and settlements secret from the public with gag clauses so they can keep spouting the “everythig is awesome with vaccines” message.
>> Ignore what Im saying at your PERIL
I too have a campaign...
I’m hoping to bring awareness to our fellow FRiends that Disney and Comcast despise the Republic...
Good luck... lol.
Why do you post such an article so early in the morning? I do not have time to properly debunk all of the anti-science kooks, and they have already swarmed this thread. Ugh!
The fact that the symptoms of a genetic disorder show up in young children, at the age when vaccines must be administered, does not mean that the vaccines caused the genetic condition.
A lot of brain development is going on in young children. When the genes regulating the process are faulty, the parents often only notice the effects when the children start missing developmental milestones. The disease is there from conception, however. But most parents cannot pick up the abnormalities in the behavior of newborn infants, especially if they have no prior experience with infants.
The handful of antigens present in a vaccine is insignificant next to the daily exposure to millions of antigens that children normally experience. Ever see a baby drop food on the floor and then grab it and shove it into his mouth? That floor is just crawling with microbes, which are chock full of antigens. So are most objects babies encounter, and they put their dirty little fingers in their mouths after touching dirty objects all the time.
Considering the death tolls from infectious disease, what do you suppose might be the true agenda of those who try to scare parents away from giving their children lifesaving vaccines? Of course, they'll never say to parents that they are trying to stop vaccine use to curb global overpopulation. They'd rather use lies to scare people into accepting their agenda. They are much like any other leftists in that regard.
