Cosmic dawn: astronomers detect signals from first stars in the universe
The Guardian ^ | Feb 28 2018 | Hannah Devlin

Astronomers have detected a signal from the first stars as they appeared and illuminated the universe, in observations that have been hailed as “revolutionary”.

We haven’t found the edges or the center of the universe yet, and might never. Every time we build a better telescope, we find a few hundred billion more galaxies all racing away from each other.

This finding seems to be based on some assumptions.

LOTS of assumptions.

Jeez with infinity there is no center and there are no outer limits. It’s incomprehensible but l can understand that much, the rest is best left to the Lord.

One thing we do know for sure, though.

Loved that show. Sincerely hope he found Christ before he passed away.

....and may hold information....

The faint radio signals suggest....

The faint imprint left by the glow ...also appears to contain ... which, if confirmed ...

This led scientists to predict .... that ought, in theory, to still be perceptible today.

Remarkably, Bowman and colleagues appear to have overcome these odds ....

If confirmed, these results would suggest....

The theory would also suggest that dark matter particles....

Lincoln Greenhill, ... said that if confirmed the dark matter observations ....

Never mind all of the assumptions that are just presented as fact.

Well, you’re assuming the Universe has a center and edges.

In calling these “the first stars” they are assuming that their observations are coming to an end. I mean, what else is there to look at in our past beyond the first?

Funding Cancelled!

It seems to me that you’re providing proof that it wasn’t presented as fact.

It’s a good thing we can now see gravitational waves.

I’m of the opinion that the ‘Red Shift’ is not what they assume it to be.

Are they quite sure these are from the “first stars in the universe”?
Or do they just think these are the first stars in the universe?

Yes, a bit like some paleontologist inferring from a tooth he just found what the animal looked like.

You want proof? What kind of proof?

As former Prime Minister of Canaduh, the Right Honourable (actually somewhat dishonourable) Jean Chretien once said,
"A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven."

Well, you’re assuming the Universe has a center and edges.

Well, that's the interesting thing. No matter where you are, you are at the center of the universe, and the edges are equidistant. The speed of light implies the perceived distance to the edge reflects the age of the universe, because you can only see back to the beginning. Sure, the universe may be larger than you may perceive, but as far as you're concerned that part beyond the horizon of your light cone doesn't exist (yet).

Which of course if the same observation holds true for every point, this implies the universe has no center and no edges...

There's some other fun stuff. The math for black holes suggests that some light passing close to the black hole is bent (really it's space-time that is deformed so as to provide a path for the light, but hey) so as to send it back to the origin, wherever the origin happens to be now. If so, we should be able to look into our past when we look closely at the edge of a black hole, perhaps all the way back to the beginning of the universe. hands waving of course, because we'll also need a massive gravitational lens. But it also should be possible to prove the "edge of the universe is equidistant" theory this way...as a corollary the entire sky is full of the history of the universe, because everywhere you look, there's probably a black hole reflecting it's view of the entire visible universe at you (as of the moment in the past it's distance implies).

Following the big bang, the universe initially existed as a cold, starless expanse of hydrogen gas awash with radiation, known as the Cosmic Microwave Background.

"Follwing the big bang": Big Band is an assumption

"the universe initially existed as a cold": Another big assumption of a "cold universe"

"starless expanse": Yep! Astronomers were there to witness that occurrence, with "no stars" and a "big expanse"

starless expanse of "hydrogen": why hydrogen; what came before the hydrogen?

"awash with radiation": where did the radiation come from? Hydrogen by itself is not radioactive. The big bang? That's assuming that the big bang caused radiation, but radiation has to arise from something that existed before hydrogen, so, all the radiation was created by the big bang?

"Known as the Cosmic Microwave Background": These are just observations of microwave radiation, but, did it actually come FROM the big bang, or did it exist before, or was "something" else responsible?

I hate not having the complete story, but, for now, speculation and theories is mostly what cosmology is about.
