Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced that archeological investigations found a 7,000-year-old Native American ancestral burial site in the Gulf of Mexico near Venice.
The Florida Department of State takes our responsibility for the preservation, respectful treatment and security of this rare and unique site very seriously, said Secretary Detzner. Our dedicated team of underwater archaeologists has done an incredible job of documenting and researching the Manasota Key Offshore archaeological site, and I am extremely proud of the work. Our hope is that this discovery leads to more knowledge and a greater understanding of Floridas early peoples. We are thankful for the cooperation of our partners, including Gulf Coast Community Foundation and their CEO, Mark Pritchett, who has provided invaluable support and integration with the local community.
The Manasota Key Offshore (MKO) site is reportedly unprecedented and is located on the continental shelf in offshore waters, preserved in what appears to have been a peat-bottomed freshwater pond thousands of years ago.
The state says that out of respect for the individuals buried there and their living descendants, divers are restricted from disturbing the site.
6-month-old infant found dead at home in Clearwater Officials say the MKO archaeological site demonstrates that submerged offshore archaeological sites have survived natural occurrences, such as erosion and hurricanes.
Dr. Ryan Duggins, Underwater Archaeology Supervisor for BAR, said, Seeing a 7,000-year-old site that is so well preserved in the Gulf of Mexico is awe inspiring. We are truly humbled by this experience. It is important to remember that this is a burial site and must be treated with the utmost respect. We now know that this type of site exists on the continental shelf. This will forever change the way we approach offshore archaeology. As we continue to learn as much as possible from the site, we look forward to sharing that knowledge with the people of Florida.

Do they know it’s 7000 years old because of the dates on the tombstones?
Nah, they did carbon fiber radio dating
They found a wooden flash drive f
I would guess that their ‘dating’ is based on when the area of the burial site was not underwater.
They saw Venice, and died.
Venice, Florida. The Italians were so impressed by this that they named a city after it.
But..but...but the Native Amercanos didn't drive SUV's or fly their biz jets around willy nilly then did they? Global warming raised the sea level, how, why?
Native Americans in Italy.
This could change our understanding of human history and anthropology forever!

The redskins have sure got the palefaces buffaloed. There is no other 7,000 year old burial anywhere in the world where the archaeologists would be told to do anything other than dig and learn all they could.
That means sea levels were very far below where they are today. Those people must have had a lot of SUV's............................

...or gills.
Coasts have changed a bit since the last glacial maximum:
One of the graves had a first generation iphone and after a quick recharge it still had the date of the last tweet the owner sent.
How do they know it’s a “native American” site if they are not allowed to disturb it?
We have been aware of this site for a while now, with preliminary investigations done. Just couldn’t say anything.
I’m guessing from just that section of map one could make an estimate on how much percent of water was not in the oceans but locked up in the ice. Then - take that same percentage of rain water and lock that up in the ice.
These idiot tree huggers talk about global warming and droughts. It was a lot drier when the earth was cold. And my bet is that we are due for another, mile-thick ice over Chicago type cooling event, based on the previous cycles of warming and cooling.
