All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

Posted on 02/26/2018 12:12:20 PM PST by CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

Neat, how large is your pond? 80 tons of limestone - it must be huge!!

I’m wondering how big they need to be to have fish.

Ours doesn’t hold water consistently though. I’d have to somehow fix that issue.

LOL! Mine has a good memory, so he is completely disorganized. I am exactly the opposite. So I have to try to ignore his way of doing things or it drives me nuts.

How’s the shoulder today? I’ve done my arm stretches and am using heat now, I think PT will start me on exercises tomorrow. I’ll request it if not.

Interesting idea and not something I ever heard about before. I wonder if Food Service masks would be good enough? When I thought I was going to open a spice business, I got a couple boxes. They are fairly cheap.
***********************************************************************************
They would be helpful for some things, but not for others. I have to do more research to determine what I think we will most likely need. Since we are not located near a military base or a big city, our probability for attacks that would impact the air is not that great, I think.

CottonBall :" What kind of birds eat mosquitoes? "

Bats consume numerous mosquitoes each night.
You know, those birds that fly, wheel about on a dime, and fly at or less than tree level at dusk.
In the wild, they will roost under bridges, roof gables, and over-hangs; occasionally they are found in attics amid shrieks of horror.
I have read of bats consuming as many as 3,200 mosquitoes per night flight.
Bats act and live socially, and are not prone to live isolated; they thrive as a "community", and work and feed together.
Local bird seed and wildlife supply houses offer "Bat houses" for sale, to encourage the populations.
Since bats operate at dusk and throughout the evening, you might not even see them,
but you will notice the benefit of their presence with fewer mosquito annoyances.

The ruler tool on Google Earth says it will be .35 acre of surface area when it fills up. If my lying eyes are right it should have about 16’ depth of water in the deep middle part.

It had a ton of fish when it was only 5’ deep.

You don’t need a giant lake to have good fish.

LOL mine has a memory like a steel trap (so he says)
however, the past several years he has not retained to memory everything. Still argue with him at certain times, knowing that he is mistaken. He abhors the thought that he might be wrong...him? impossible!

Shoulder/arm is healing slowly. Able to get out of bed now with no pain whatsoever. Must be cautious on how to reach and how to lift.

Glad your shoulder is better. Just don’t over do it! (I’m one to talk, I always over do stuff and get myself in trouble!)

I probably ought to encourage bats to hang around here. I bet the bat houses have to be up high though...

Bats, they can carry rabies. Dragonflies and hummingbirds both eat mosquitoes and no danger of rabies.

Hummers do? Neat, we get lots of those. I feed them but maybe shouldn’t so they’ll go after mosquitoes. Tho we rarely get mosquitoes either - not sure why I asked that ?!

Those rabid varmints - best stay clear of them. We had one on the front yard this past year. A rabid skunk, fighting, slaying and attempting to dine on a slaughtered next of kin. Had to call our neighbor (who had a shotgun and sharp aim) She came over and bang, dead eye! When she passed away, and DH had given his gun to his niece’s DH, we were left with nada protection. Another reason for movin’ on.

LOL all we’ve heard in our new location is fireworks. Suppose with the water nearby they feel it safe, but it certainly can be loud and startling. Christmas, Thanksgiving...every holiday seems to be celebrated with explosives of some sort. Not complaining, just experiencing something new. They are polite in that they don’t set them off after 10 pm and the neighborhood is sleeping. Which is where I’m headed, now.

Do you have a lot of fireworks here. And even way after 10 p.m. if it’s a holiday, well after midnight sometimes. When we first moved here I was surprised because those sort of things we’re not a good idea in a dry climate. Like you said, I guess they’re not worried about fires.

Hmmmm we do have a lot of skunks here. I was more worried about my dog getting sprayed. Last time was his sixth time. The vet doesn’t think he’s learning his lesson ;( but I hadn’t thought about rabies. I’m really going to have to be more diligent.

I have been struggling with misdiagnosed very painful bilateral golfer’s elbow since last May. So I haven’t kept up with this thread, or much of anything else.

Ma, quant'è stonato, Cottonball! Hope you feel better soon! I had good luck with yoga after a shoulder injury. Takes a long time, but eventually heals.

I’m going to the senior center here and see what exercise classes they have. I’ll sign up for yoga, for sure!

Thanks for the tip!

I have to be able to carry my luggage to Venezia, you know? :-)

I noticed the local “Michaels” has Christmas candles on sale, 70% off.

I bought one, 4” x 6” cylinder, for $3.60. Far less than the cost of an equivalent volume of paraffin.

Will probably get a few more if I happen by there again.

Thanks for the great tip. That’s a candle that will last a long time.

When we moved I got rid of a lot of my supplies, particularly oil lamps and things like that that were hard to move. I haven’t stocked up again and need to.
