All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

Posted on 02/26/2018 12:12:20 PM PST by CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

good idea. You never know when electronic devices will go down.

It looks like I can sort and organize it best on my main computer. But I do almost everything else on my tablet or phone. So I will be emailing it back-and-forth, so that’ll be a good back up.

When things settle down here a bit I’ll ask if anybody wants to be cochair. They can be the second keeper of the list.

I know metmom has a few threads of her own,… So I’ll let you pass on this one :-)

I don’t know your thread was about all that stuff also. I never knew where to ask my things that seem to be in between the recipe thread and the gardening thread, like about canning and things like that.

Sorry to double up here then! Should we try to combine them then? I kind a like the way granny had an ongoing thread because it seems like some topics just got dropped when people went from one thread to the next, When the next weeks started. It also seems like people really tapered off After the weekend, waiting for the new thread to start. Whereas grannies was just join in anytime type thing. That was kind of what I was looking for.

But we can do this anyway you like. There’s no point doubling up on the same topic.

I haven’t thought of a name; any suggestions welcome.

Definitely prep oriented as well as nutrition and whatever else fits.

I read about how nutritious and healthy barley is. Finally ordered regular barley and barley flakes to mix in with oats for cereal.

After many efforts, I gave all the barley to my friend with goats. I could not figure out a way to make it edible. :-( It was always slimy.

I did manage to mix some barley flour while making bread, though.

I’m sure that recipe is a complete protein but you’d have to eat a lot of it to get a lot of protein, but what’s interesting is if one eats legumes, grains and some milk products on a regular basis it’s almost impossible not to get enough protein. Especially if you toss in a few nuts or seeds, tahini, almond butter, or even baked potatoes and broccoli, for instance. Many vegetables have surprising amounts of protein.

And then there’s iron...

I think it’s fine the way you are doing it. I only have time to for sure ping once a week. And like you, a lot of people hesitate to post about other things, even though in the winter especially, I remind them.

So I’d say do your thing - it’s an addition - no biggie.

OK. If things get really heavy into gardening I will be sure to post a link to your latest thread.

One of the best gardening books I’ve ever read is by John Jeavons (sp?), the title is something like “How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Can Imagine On Less Land Than You Can Believe”. I’ll find it on Amazon and post a link. I learned how to make compost from that book. No turning needed, and it works fast and great.

Layers...

Aha, here it is, I didn’t get the name quite right:

Probably should have made a name change at some point. Instead I just changed the description a little, and posted occasionally that other topics are of interest too.

My interest in gardening was due to feeling a need to be prepared to be self sufficient, and to learn some of the old ways of doing things: Back to Basics. But I inherited the thread, and was reluctant to change the name:

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

It’s funny I guess I never noticed that we can talk about other things. I think I go by the name, it says that “garden” thread and then I don’t read the fine print… Or if I read it it doesn’t sink in. Sorry about that! I didn’t want to get in trouble for going off topic, lol! That seems to happen in a lot of threads. Not necessarily to me but I see other people getting reprimanded at times... What’s it called, derailing the thread?

Oh goody, that’s what I need to learn how to do. Without turning.

so if I just leave my compost pile the way it is, it will eventually decompose? I seem to be getting a lot of seeds sprouting in there, morning glories and tomatoes. I must be doing something wrong. I thought I read that if it heats up and doesn’t thing well enough, the seeds won’t sprout!

It could be I’m not keeping it wet enough. Especially in the middle layers.

I can tell you that no one on the garden thread has ever been reprimanded for being off topic since I started doing the ping list. So feel free to chime in on any topic any time - except - political.

Political tends to sprout flame wars - I would like to keep the garden thread as a refuge from those things. LOL

Yeah, it is great at that. When I’ve been on another heated thread, I wander over to the gardening thread, it’s like sitting in a cool calm plant covered arbor where I can just relax and find serenity :-)

Look of course stuff will grow in compost. If it didn’t would you really want to add it to your garden?

Now if it isn’t hot enough, you might not be killing certain soil borne diseases etc. For that, you can cover it with plastic in he sun, and that will sterilize it.

That’s what concerns me about the Tatler rings also. They are reusable but they said check them every time. But… What the heck am I looking for? How do I know if they are good or not?

That guy had more than one book, and I bought some of them.

In his self sufficient garden plans, you always plan on 60% to be for high carbon leftover compost plants to rejuvenate the soil. The rest was divided between marketable plants and plants for food.

That’s good to know, two decades was a long time!

So I basically look to make sure that the rubber isn’t cracked or dried out?

lol, That’s true, if plans don’t throwing it it wouldn’t be worth much :-)

I was concerned that plants I was putting into it to decompose were instead providing the seeds. Anyway maybe not.

but putting black plastic over it sounds like a good idea, it would heat up and stay moist.
