Super Bowl LII will be a test for the NFL's season of discontent
LA Times ^ | January 29, 2018 | Stephen Battaglio

When Super Bowl LII kicks off next Sunday with the New England Patriots facing the Philadelphia Eagles, there will be more on the line than the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the winner. A season of turmoil and changing viewer habits has chipped away at what has long been the most durable TV franchise. As the league's marquee event, the Super Bowl has always been bigger than football, drawing non-fans who are partying with friends and watching the big-budget, celebrity-studded commercials priced at $5 million per 30 seconds that will be teased online and presented to an audience of more than 100 million viewers. Spending on Super Bowl ads has surged 35% in the last decade.

Think about this. Outside of Tom Brady, how many players that have been part of the Patriots’ success over the years will wind up in Canton? I can’t think of any.

This will be the first one since the beginning (1967) that I will not have watched.

Pizza Guy asked me about the game when I went into his shop over the weekend. I told him that I stopped watching after Week Two this season and that I wouldn't do anything to support people who hate America.

Moss will get in partly thanks to the second act the Pats gave him. Probably Gronk. Vinatieri for sure. Maybe Welker. Not many though. It’s the money ball way Bill builds a team, no over paying, that let’s a lot of the stars walk. While keeping the team deep. What’ll really keep folks out is the way they drop off when the Pats are through, Welker was nobody in Miami, then basically nobody again in Denver, honestly I don’t know if he’s still in the league even. Branch was great in NE, crap in Seattle, then great again when he returned to NE. They definitely maximize talent.

I won’t watch the game but I might watch the coin toss. A friend of my cousin in WV, Hershel “Woody” Williams, is going to toss the coin. He (Woody) is one of only four Congressional Medal of Honor recipients from WW II still living. He’s 94, but doesn’t look it in the recent pictures I’ve seen of him.

Vinatieri has been with the Colts longer than with the Pats.

I thought Bruschi was on his way before his career was cut short.

I think too a lot of people just don’t get Belichick. He’s so dry. He’s got this reputation of being no fun, but having been raised on British humor I think he’s freaking hilarious. But if you don’t realize he’s pulling one on you it plays as joyless

Chuck Noll was the same way.

Yeah but he’s a 2 time SB MVP with the Pats. That pretty much wrote his ticket.

I think few people will be watching here in Pittsburgh.

There’s only one thing people around here hate worse than Brady, Belichik and the Pats.

And that’s ANYTHING from Philadelphia.

Ok, so then the only other Pats player in Canton will be their kicker, LOL!

We are having an anti-NFL party. We announced it at dinner last night and a Patriots fan was shocked: “Why?!” Answer: Because I refuse to support an organization that has endorsed the tearing down of the country I love. Particularly coming from a bunch millionaires. I do not know why any self-respecting American would give them their time or their money.

Silence.

“Take me in the Sixth Round, huh, I’ll show you”. He’s 40 years old now and that chip is still on his shoulder.”

I never knew he went that late in the draft.

Tom is in good company though.
Joe Montana was a seventh rounder, John Unitas was cut by the Steelers and played semi-pro for a couple of years, Kurt Warner had to play arena ball before he made it in the NFL.
Warren Moon, though never winning a SB, had to play six seasons in the CFL before the NFL gave him a shot in Houston.

Not bad company for Tom to be in.
At least the Pats had sense enough to recognise a diamond when they saw one.

I also have plans for that day, and my plans do not include watching the No-Fans-Left National-Felons-League.

When Tom Brady won his 1st Super Bowl, his Wide Receiver, Brandon Cooks was 8 years old and his Tight End, Rob Gronkowski was 12.

I'll be looking to see if any Eagles fans have purple on their clothes, courtesy of Vikings fans. lol

Actually, I'll be visiting my winery, it's wine club pickup day.

I can't stand either team. Growing up, used to be a Raiders fan. Arrived in Texas after graduating from college in '76. Never was a Cowboys fan, either. Kind of lost most of my interest in the NFL. Now it serves to fill in time until the start of college hoops.

They’ll get viewers from Boston and Philly ... but that’s about it. No one else cares.
