There’s a place for Steven Spielberg, and apparently it’s on New York’s Upper West Side in the 1950s. A casting call has gone out for a remake of “West Side Story,” written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, author of Spielberg’s terrific “Lincoln” screenplay and, of course, “Angels in America.”
It’s a pro-forma casting call because, in the end, the new “West Side Story” is going to need stars. Big names. And because of the setting and the time we are in, it’s going to need actual Puerto Ricans or Latinos for the parts of characters like Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. There will be no fudging this in 2018. The casting call says in capital letters: MUST BE ABLE TO SPEAK SPANISH.

I can only imagine the abomination that will be created by Spielburg and updated for the ultimate PC. I remember the original and cannot fathom what will be the end product after a PC Liberal Hollywood gets through with it.
I can't even imagine where they will find any talent worthy of the project, those people just don't exist any more.
Will he pick annoying nobodies to play the leads ?
Does he think there needs to be a PC version?

I wasn’t a big fan of the story at all. Kind of a take-off of Romeo and Juliet. What was wrong with THAT original?

To be fair: Thomas Crowne Affair #2 was better than #1 because it was updated to contemporary elegance...

I tried to start a chapter of the Jets in my high school.
Some of the guys wanted to know what it was all about.

By definition, Puerto Ricans are not “immigrants,” per se, because Puerto Rico is a US possession. ;-)
I don’t like the heavy fake-sounding Puerto Rican accents used in the old West Side Story movie. Don’t think its needed and it distracts. No one is using a Vietnamese accent (thank God) in Miss Saigon productions, or French accents in Les Mis.
