My question would be, why did the Feds not grab Jones and lock him away permanently for blatantly violating the do not call list? There's no level in hell low enough for this piece of scum.
I figured the Do Not Call list was dead about six years ago when I filed a complaint about a robocaller and the state sent me a letter saying “Our investigation has determined that these calls originated in Bulgaria, which is outside of our jurisdiction.”
Once again, our old friend the Internet, screwing-up life.
I hate robocalls. There’s this one from perky Allison from the warranty department. I speak back to her and she apparently listens and responds. Then I ask if this is a recording. She politely responds, yes for quality control purposes we use pre recorded messages.
Anyone who expected the Do Not Call list as set up and currently being run would ever be used as anything *but* a “CALL EVERYONE ON THIS LIST REPEATEDLY” list was a naive idiot.
This could *never* have ended up as anything *but* a call list, especially since it was clear from day one that the Feds were not serious about what token enforcement was even possible.
Scumbag list bump for later....
I love the ones that offer to help me with my credit card debt. I always ask for a supervisor to tell me how much debt their records say I have. If they say $0.00 I’ll know they have my records.
And the Indian guy offering to protect my computer as an agent of Microsoft. Yea right.
I can’t stand telemarketers.
I did get a real one last week. It was a real estate agent trolling for new customers. I live in Maryland and never changed my Michigan phone number when I moved here in 2001. I said, that if he wanted to drive 600 miles to show my house, I’d be glad to sign up with him. We got a little laugh out of it.
I wonder if a person could do a GoFundMe page based on the premise that if their goal was met they’d beat the living tar out of that guy.
Phone only rings once and then hangs up. Many of them don't bother to call again.
Blocking the calls is necessary but it’s like bailing water out of a sub with a leak.
The dirty little secret is that the telcos could stop these calls tomorrow if they so desired. But every number issued, every line connected and every call made represents telco revenue so the calls continue.
They didn’t arrest him because it is a Civil penalty, not a Criminal penalty. All they can do is fine him for violating telecommunication laws. You can’t make every crime a Criminal penalty. Not enough jails.
I never answer my phone anymore. I wait to see if a person actually starts talking and if it’s someone I know, then I’ll pick up. I get a lot of disconnects when the caller thinks no one is there.
Finally an article that shows how spoofing makes all laws useless, and turns the Do Not Call List into a joke.
Blocking the number that appears does not work because of spoofing. You are blocking a legitimate person’s number that is being used as if it were the caller’s number.
Nomorobo is dumb.
No law can be enforced against someone who isn’t in the USA.
There is no solution. I would gladly be in favor of executing robocallers in broad daylight in Times Square.
The only solution would be for all countries to enforce a new system that transmits the REAL phone number of the caller, ALONG WITH the number that the recipient should reply to. Obviously never happen - never get all countries to agree and enforce it. Also, womens’ crisis centers would object, and so this will never happen.
Public execution.
Most BS calls are on my home phone. My cable company supplies my home phone. The names and number are shown on the TV and on the phone display. I dont answer call from numbers I dont know. If its an emergency? Theyll leave message.
My cell is another story. My kids phones and mine have the same exchange number. Someone must manufacture make believe phone numbers with my exchange and call me. At first I was answering these. Then I got smart and let it ring.
The worst callers are the make believe Police athletic league calls (and other so called charities) . Guy sounds like a cop. Im wise because my brother was a telemarketer 30 years ago pretending to be with the Police Athletic League.
If I pick up I just say I dont give to any charitable organizations via telemarketers. Then Hang up Im not going to argue.
The author makes Google look like good guys. I routinely get robo calls on behalf of Google. I really don’t believe Google is interested in stopping robo calls.
I remember a movie from decades ago how a sinister corporation had the ability to make a call and fry the brain of whomever answered with blood pouring out of their ears. I want one of those phones.
We don’t answer the phone period. Been this way for over twenty years. The OGM says “Leave a message at the tone”. If they don’t we don’t respond. Otherwise they hang up. Legitimate callers understand, and expect our call back.
Lately the number of spam callers has gone down, but that doesn’t mean anything, because historically the spammers do for some reason slow down, but then come on strong again down the road.
I generally don’t get many of these calls because I have a home number that I don’t answer. I give that number out to retailers and other businesses. I have a cell phone number that I only give out to my friends and family. That is the one I use for almost all of my personal calls. It has worked pretty well over the past 10+ years.
I’ll say it again: there should be NO WAY for any random dialer to create any Caller ID name and number it wants. Implement that, then let’s see how big of a problem remains.
Good Post.
They are using local real phone numbers to spoof. If you hit redial you’ll get an actual innocent person, who’s phone number has been stolen.
Another trick they use is to spoof their number with something close to yours by using your area code and the first three digits in your phone number. Those are ALWAYS robocalls.
I have an idea that might stop phone spammers. Imagine if your phone only rang if it came from a special private number and which needed a specific text code as well. (Which you could change as necessary). Calls to your public number would first ring a machine which asked a question which needs a human to answer it. For example: “In order to prove you are not a robo-caller please enter the current year now”. Any call which could not answer the programmed questions would be recorded and generate a text version that would be sent to your e-mail address. If you dumped the email the recorded message would be dumped as well.Clicking on a link in a email you might want would play the call for Any call that passed the programmed questions would make your private number ring.
Why are so many posters putting up with this nonsense when there is a solution?
nomorobo.com is a free service for land line phones and has a monthly fee for cell phones. This service is able to block 99 out of 100 junk phone calls. Your phone will ring one time if it is a junk call and then disconnect. So, if your phone rings a second time, except in rare occasions will it be a junk call. Simply wait for the second ring.
We have been using this service for years.
