The world has managed to make it through most of 2017 [3] without the return of cataclysmic, great power conflict. In some parts of the world (most notably Syria) tensions have declined significantly. In others, already difficult situations have grown even more tense. Here are five crises that could lead to great power conflict over the course of 2018.

Southern Spain tries to break away, Muslims from all over Europe and ME rush in and help, then take over and establish a Muslim state.
Britain gets involved to protect Gibraltar. In no time, it's a free-for-all.
European countries with significant numbers of refugees risk internal revolt.
The NATO pact fractures, and Russia sees an opportunity to retake the Baltic states. Poland is once again overrun and divvied up, by the same two countries as last time.
Switzerland attempts to remain neutral, not so successful this time. Sweden is an active participant, after losing control of its own government.
Greece falls quickly. Italy and France hold on a little longer. For a while, Britain stands alone, but Churchill is long dead and the Royal Family is impotent.
From here on it gets Biblical.
Werent the Pakis our allies and the Indians were the Russians? Something changed when we moved our tech service support to India.

Israel.
Israel.
For all intents and purposes - Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon are not even nations anymore. Nor do they function as such.
All are proxies of Iran.
Damascus will be the first city nuked since Nagasaki in either 2018 or 2019 whenever Israel decides to deal with Iran/Hezbollah.
Russia, Turkey, and Iran will foolishly attack Israel for this once Damascus is destroyed. Those nations, will also cease to exist after their failed evil plot.

The author is deluded, and is a ilberal anti-Trump partisan. His focus on liberal talking points steers him to false conclusions.
As you say, a hot spot could flare up anywhere. A conflict in Africa could mushroom into WWIII, with major powers squaring off against each other (China is going all in, in Africa). The European Union could splinter, as EU countries against further immigration from Africa and the ME go against Germany and other countries, and could pull in major powers and spiral out of control. It's not going to be Taiwan or Ukraine or Turkey. The major ones are NK and The Gulf. Those two are the most likely to explode out of control, and it won't be because of President Trump despite what the author thinks.
In order:
North Korea
Iran
Ukraine
Venezuela
Turkey
Pakistan
Nicaragua
Germany
China
Russia
War is Possible in many states and failed states all over BUT the flash points for a nuke war are few. I list: 1) North Korea (due to an unstable leader with a god complex) 2) Saudi Arabia vs, Iran. (Arabia Buys Nukes from Israel or Pakistan) 3. Russia vs Ukraine. But thats it. Other possibles—China vs. India, or Pakistan vs India.
Dead bad guys...mussies...is always good news.
